Finding good deals in these tough markets is often a lot easier than you think. Finding project homes to buy is a great way to capitalize on your investment, without having to fork over large amounts of money to complete the project.
There are quite a few reasons these houses go onto the market, and if you understand what causes such low prices, you can learn to utilize situations where these properties go up for sale. One of the biggest reasons these types of homes make their way onto the markets is because the owner ran out of money for the project.
Over the past few years, lending practices have tightened up substantially, and the owner may have believed that they had the financing in place to complete it. Or, they could have underestimated the costs involved with the project of the size they were planning, and ran out of money before it was near completion.
You can capitalize on this situation because the project has already gotten underway. Most times, the original owner had high expectations for the outcome of the project, and usually didn’t skimp on the quality of products and materials used. When this is the case, you should jump on the home as quickly as possible. You can end up finishing a luxurious, sought after project that the original owner intended to complete, and turn huge profits from the sale.
Another reason project homes make such great investments, is because you can complete the project much sooner than if you were starting from scratch. Projects like these can take a long time to complete, and end up costing a lot of money the longer it takes to finish.
When a previous owner has already gotten halfway, or even more than halfway through the remodel, you can swoop in to complete it for them, saving yourself months of hassles, frustrations, and worst of all, spending.
Looking for and finding project homes to invest your money into, provides a great way to capitalize on your money. If you know the circumstances in which houses like these find their way onto the markets, and then how to properly move in and complete the renovations, you can easily make a lot of money even in down real estate markets.
Once you’ve been around the block a time or two, these types of deals will jump out at you, however, when you’re just beginning, you should take this advice to heart.

This is food for thought. I've often seen real estate ads saying "add your personal touches to this part-completed home" and been too chicken to take on the project. But you're quite right - if you've ever watched the British "Grand Designs" program, you know that inexperienced project home builders often set unrealistic standards and that's why they run out of money.
He-he I already got my project home - the one I am renting now LOL. But then it sits on two acres - which I need to mow though :D
