Part Time Jobs For High School Students

Younger people can have a tough time trying to find ways to earn some extra money, especially given the economic disaster that is unfolding,, but with enough creativity and perseverance you can start bringing in some cash without having to actually have a job.  Working online is one option, and I know a few people who helped way their way through college b doing so, but I am going to suggest a few offline jobs here.

Being active in your community is a great way to open new doors, so if you are not already involved, you should probably think about helping out your neighbors, and other people you see around your local area.  Word travels fast when a young person is willing to help out, so if you keep at it long enough more and more people will know that you are available.

Babysitting for busy parents you or your family may know can be successful if you love children.  You may be required to give up some of your evenings, so be prepared, but most babysitting jobs will require you to work throughout the day.  You will also need to be certified in CPR, as well as child care and safety before you are able to apply at daycare facilities, but watching one or two children for friends of your family is still possible.  Ask your parents, or people you know with small children if they would let you watch them sometimes.

If you prefer to be outdoors and working with your hands to earn money, you should consider mowing yards and performing other lawn care services for people you know. Lawn care services are an easy way to make money throughout the summer if you are willing to work during the hot daylight hours.

Finding lawn care jobs is typically fairly easy. When people find out that a young, able bodied individual is willing to take care of their lawn for them, they will usually jump at the opportunity. Depending on the size of the yard you are maintaining, you can expect between $20 and $50 each time you visit. Most homes have a lawn mower, but in the unlikely event they do not - consider hiring one (or pinching the old man's). Brand new decent lawnmowers like this Black and Decker CM1936 run at around $400.

Washing cars is another way to make some money as a young person. During the weekends people are busy running errands and usually do not take the time to wash their vehicles. If you speak with managers of local shopping centers you may be able to setup a small car washing operation on Saturdays and Sundays. These two days are when most people run their errands and finishing shopping, so you can clean their vehicle while they are inside of the store. Make sure that you have permission before you start setting up shop though, to avoid any potential problems. You may also want to invite a couple friends to help you finish each car quicker.

Whichever you choose - be careful out there. :)

great hub. The rate of youth unemployment is high especially in poor economic times. Also, youth these days aren't as motivated to get work, they grew up in relative affluence......yours are good suggestions....cheers.

Mark,

How as the minimum wage had an impact on summer jobs for kids in school? I've read articles in the past that as the MW has gone up, businesses have found ways to avoid the need of summer jobs for kids, ie: fast food automates more of the work previously done my hand.

Nice hub!

My pleasure. @FC- that does not surprise me. Fast food joints are not on my list because they will always take advantage.

Wonderful ideas for the young. We've had quite of few kids from our neighborhood advertising services.

I do want to add something on the side of caution; recently too little girls came to our home offering to wash our car or do some housework. This bothered me because of the nature of predators.

I feel it's dangerous for the young to offer "in home" services. No one really knows who and what your neighbors are. It's foolish for someone who calls themselves a parent to allow children to offer services in the "privacy" of the home of strangers.

That is true - you have to be careful.
