optimizing your webpage for google adsense

By Mark Knowles

When I first started writing here at hubpages, I had no idea about anything. Nothing. I had never written a word online and did not know who to believe about making money online – or about making money with google adsense which is the most prolific form of advertising revenue on the internet.

One thing that never occurred to me was that the placement of text capsules and photo capsules would dictate the placement of certain adzones. The positioning of the ads in relation to the content is one of the keys. Hubpages usues YieldBuild, an ad optimization software that, as far as I can tell, does an extremely good job of choosing the ad type and placing it in the best position. The layout I choose includes two blocks of text and one photograph, allowing the ads a range of positions available. I use the exact same layout on my own blogs and have found this to be optimum.

Content

It is always a toss-up between getting ad clicks and satisfying a reader’s needs. You can’t have it both ways. I see an awful lot of people on the hubpages forums asking why they are not getting any clicks.

Simple – your content either does not suit the range of ads available – for example if you have just written a hub about your experiences as a snail farmer – you are unlikely to have many appropriate advertisers.

Or – you gave the reader exactly what they were looking for and they have no need to click on any ads. As an example – my recipe hubs. I have found these to be very low paying and generate low amounts of ad clicks. Why? Because is someone came in looking for a hamburger recipe – that is exactly what they got – the best hamburger recipe on the planet. They have no need to click on any ads.

So – if you want ad clicks – you need to tease a reader and then give them a reason to click on an ad. At one point I seriously considered deleting half my recipe hubs. The half with the recipe instructions……… Just kidding.

Keywords and subject

Your pages need content related to keywords that advertisers will pay for. Simple really. Write about a given subject, add the keywords to both your text and the tags – then give them nearly, but not quite enough information – you will generate more clicks.

Mark I am quite sure that you used to tell me content was king LMAO! Tease your readers - naughty boy - I hope there are not going to pics of semi-naked Knowles on these hubchallenge hubs!

There is one thing for sure making money on line is not as easy as a lot of people say it is, but adsense is definitely one of the best options for creating a revenue. I also have some formats that seem to work quite well and others that seem to not work at all. So time I think to revisit the poor performers and re-arrange them to see what happens starting with your suggestions I think.

When I first started writing online (here on HubPages) the only thing I knew a little about was keywords. I didn't know how to choose which ones to target (for higher earnings) though, but I did know how to (somewhat) research which keywords were actually searched for.

You can deliver info and still get ad clicks, you just have to be a little more crafty in how you do it. I think you've began figuring it out by taking into consideration the layout of your hubs. I usually opt for more capsules, I like to use more options, but if this way works for you and makes you money, I guess. :-) I'm still learning and tweaking myself.

AdSense really is (in my opinion) a lot easier to make money with than, say, affiliates. You just have to know what you're doing. And as bad ad you may want to you really can't give the reader everything. The true knowledge seeker will dig up & find what they need.

I decided to go ahead and create a separate profile to see if the "expert" niche approach makes any difference in earnings. I like that you can write about anything under the sun, but I often wonder if not having a niche effects earnings... only time will tell.

Best!

I think it is all a constant learning process. I will be interested to see which approach works best. I decided to use my own profile because I have already written on a wide variety and will most likely stay within my area of "expertise,"

Thanks, for the info on this mind bending subject. Content is king, but the payoff does not always follow-up in click $$$$. Now I understand what I have been doing wrong.

Ha - so we should leave them feeling unsatisfied so they'll click out somewhere? Just kidding, I know what you mean, sort of. I'm new to the adsense earning thing, but I'm learning. I'm sure a huge part of it, besides writing content that can match up with potential advertisers, is quantity. More hubs, more links, more clicks, more money. Thanks for the tips!

Nicely boiled down. "Keep 'em wanting more." Leveraging the ads against the text is pure genius.

lol

That seems to be the way it works. Plus a little keyword optimization and well targeted traffic. :)

So, how about when you have a whole bunch of clicks, and no bucks? Maybe I've done (or not done) something on my adsense acct? Good info, but now I feel like I missed the boat somewhere...

I'm never sure if I'm choosing the right keywords

@ Amy - I don't know why that would be the case unless google has decided they are fraudulent clicks.

@ cindy - me either - until 3 months later :)

There is a free keyword tool, you just punch in the topic and relevant keywords come up.

@ lyla- I had no traffic and got approved.

As far as the learning process, it is always evolving. I figured out a great way, made $800 in 4 weeks..... (just kidding).

Mark, glad to be back on Google Adsense after over 12 months here on HubPages. I found out that it is very important for any adsense user(new or old) to also visit, read and understand Google's help and policies(terms and conditions).

I'm learning pretty well here to always have a continued good success with adsense.

Making money online with Google Adsense is cool and rewarding. Thanks for sharing these tips.

Sometimes we hear or read just one sentence that is so blindlingly obvious we think 'why didn't we know that already?'

Example: your advice not to tell the reader everything.

We have been trying to apply this to our newer Hubs and also our website. Not sure if we are seeing results, but at least our revenue has not decreased.

Thanks for your advice.
