Mountain Biking in France is Fun
72I am lucky enough to live just a few kilometers away from the Valmasque, a beautiful National Park in the south of France, which offers some of the best mountain biking on the planet.
Having given up smoking last year, I decided that the best way to lose some of the weight I put on (thirty pounds and counting) was to buy myself a mountain bike and go get some exercise. So I did. I splashed out on a Merida Matts TFS XC 700 mountain bike and have started riding. The weather is not exactly wonderful at the moment - but I am English, so a little rain and cold is not going to put me off. In fact - thinking about it - if English people let a little rain and cold stop them from doing anything, we would never do anything - ever.
Anyway - back to mountain biking in the Valmasque - Sadly - or happily, depending on how much of a masochist you are - everything in the park is a steep hill. This makes for some great mountain biking and some really challenging technical downhills, some of which are quite dangerous because the ground is so stony - more boulders actually, but great fun if you do not fall off.

My current post-giving-up-smoking weight is a sight to behold. I do not look terribly fat because I am pretty "big boned," but - I hate to admit it - I topped out at 280 pounds after 2 months on the gummy bears and Jack Daniels diet while giving up smoking and going through a particularly painful tooth infection which became a jaw infection. either way - I lived on Gummy bears and JD for about 6 weeks until we get the infection down to the point where I could have a channel drilled in the jaw bone to relieve the pressure.
Combined with quitting smoking, this was not a pleasant end to the year. Still - time to put things right and a few extra pounds is not going to stop be from enjoying the biking. The Valmasque at this time of year is truly wonderful because there are no tourists at the moment and the mountain biking rivals anything I have ever encountered.
I chose the Merida TFS XC 700 for several reasons, not least of which is that it is heavy and tough, and I hope strong enough to cope with my post smoking weight until I get that taken care of. I purchased last years model and paid around $900 for it which is considerably less than this years model will cost you. It is reasonably well equipped with Rock Shox Tora suspension - that I am too heavy for and will need to replace before it explodes; middle of the road Shimano Deore shifters and derailleurs and Stroker Trail disc brakes that are utterly awesome. The only thing I have so far changed on the bike is the saddle - to a Fizik Arione CX. This is in my humble opinion - one of the most comfortable saddles on the market.
I cannot recommend it enough - I thought I was going to eat it on a downhill today - wet and slippery, but the bike saved me. As long as you keep pedaling, this thing will go over almost anything. And great fun too.

Hello there ! You look wonderful!! :)
You lucky guy, living in an area like that. Thank you for your well written hub.
Mark, It sounds like a wonderful place to live and you look pretty good with your bike. Glad you gave up smoking. good hub.
Thanks for sharing, I like biking too.
I gave up smoking three years ago, still not back to my old weight ;-( Perhaps I should start biking, lol! SY
Great news Mark!!! Mountain biking can be really addictive, am I right? Yes it is, I can see it in your face :D
I´m now starting to ride again after my last wrist surgery (November) but the weather is not helping (I´m not English you know lol). I hope we can ride together someday ;)
Mark - good to hear that you really did manage to conquer the dreadful weed :) I shuddered (though) at your tooth problems. In fact I downright cringed. I need a half-tooth sorting out and would rather not bother.
And so your hub - lol @ the english bit. That is SO true. We're so used to the wet, wind and cold we barely notice it. Here it's about 15º and still, my neighbours and fellow city dwellers wear gloves and scarves. In the UK we'd be wearing t-shirts and calling it a good day!
I used to love bike riding as a youngling and thinking back, it amounted to extreme biking. I was far too much a tomboy and I'm so glad none of my kids - even my sons - were as crazy as I was when sat astride a bike.
I'm sure your efforts will pay off. After all, smoking was the biggest deal - losing the weight must surely be easier huh?! ;)
Oh and funride - get on your bike you big jessie - it's warm over here lol!
You are looking great Mark, Happy new year.
I do love to cycle here in France, there is always a beautiful place to discover. I get a bit too adventurous at times and last year I got runned over by a car an broke my wrist and ankle, but as soon as I was better I was up cycling again. This time I am wearing all the proper gear: helmet, special wrist support gloves... etc. Like funride says, biking can become adictive and yes count me in for that ride :)
Mark - just remember ... what passes your lips sits on your hips. A dumb little ditty all us wimmin' learn from a young age. Just some of us ignore it and chow down. Which is why there can't be a God - chocolate wouldn't have been invented and us girls would have had the same rights to eat what we want as you boys. And all without looking 6 months pregnant lol!
And truly - the teeth thing must have been a nightmare. I had a wisdom dug out, awake, anaesthetic wouldn't work, 15 months ago. I'll never be able to sit in a dentists chair again without crying - so you have my sympathy :)
Good for you I stopped my smoking habit 9 years ago. It's hell keeping the weight off, but well worth it. You've stated your New Year off perfectly. Good Luck to you
