Custom painted motorcycle helmets in France

Custom painting a motorcycle helmet is an art form unlike any other. The challenges of creating a piece of artwork to a customer's specifications on an odd-shaped piece of plastic designed primarily to be damaged to save your skull present an interesting problem. Using an airbrush is also a challenge. One of my friends here in Antibes custom paints motorcycle helmets for a living and I wanted to feature some of his work.

His company also paints cars, vans, boats and just about anything else that can take a coat of paint or varnish. In fact - if you stand still in his workshop for long enough, you are liable to get a coat of varnish yourself. As far as I can tell - if you can draw it, they can paint it on your helmet. I have seen everything from corporate logos to cartoon characters. There is no end of possibilities for choosing your custom airbrush painted helmets, although I suppose cost may become an issue of you want something completely exotic. Still - this is the South of France where only a small percentage of us have to worry about how much things cost.

The recession is having an effect here, but this is only visible to those of us who actually live here - closed shops and restaurants - mostly closed down by the authorities for not paying taxes, and we are seeing more and more small businesses collapse under the increased weight of taxes to pay for the bailouts even here.

Still - one area that seems healthy enough is the demand for custom painted motorcycle helmets and these are a few selected ones I chose to show case their work. The company is called Riviera Reflections," an I must say - it is an appropriate name - the high gloss paint and varnishing certainly reflects well.

This one here is an example of the cartoon characters I mentioned earlier. Stunning attention to detail is par for the course. Click on the photo for a larger image.

They only use state-of-the-art (sic) paints and lacquers, and I gather they are extremely good value for money - although - If you have to ask......

The corporate helmets were used by a driving school that offers special deals to corporate customers which includes taking the specially painted helmets as a gift. Really superb customer service as well, which - if you have spent any time in France - you will know is not exactly "par for the course."

Guess there's a market for everything. Your interesting hub made me think of that old army adage - If it moves, salute it, if it doesn't, paint it.

Now, that's a cool way to advertise art! As a motorcycle rider and as an artist myself, I can appreciate this talent. Thanks for sharing.

Does anyone paint a helmet to represent the brains inside? We in the hospital field call MC helmets "brain buckets" so I would like to see one like that, LOL.

Hey, one could sell advertising space on their helmet!

When I was 18 I rode a motorcycle from Chicago to Sturgis, SD for the big rally there. I never wore a helmet. Looking back, I shake my head, especially considering I won't even snowboard without a helmet now.

If I do ever get another motorcycle I think a custom painted helmet would be fun!
