How to set up a blog what tools will you need to make it a success? If you are serious about making money blogging, there are a number of tools that are indispensable.
Hate Keyword Research? I Don't Blame you - Now Go Buy Yourself Some Keyword Research Software
If you are anything like me and have decided to make a living writing online, you will have been through a few revelations and epiphanies.
One of those revelations will probably have been that you need to do some research in order to find out the terms that people are using to enter into search engine search boxes when they are looking for something online. The simple fact is that unless people are using any terms you write on your pages to search for things – they are not going to find your pages, unless you are extremely lucky.
It does not matter how wonderful an article you have written on a subject if no one is searching for information on that subject – you are simply not going to get any traffic. And if you are like me and your goal is to make money online – traffic usually (but not always – we will get to that) means money. This is called keyword research.
The Four Components To Keyword Research.
- Determining the volume of searches being performed – both for general terms around the subject you are thinking of writing about and specific volumes of exact terms being used.
- Determining the potential income from these terms by analysing the amount that advertisers are prepared to pay on google adwords for contextual ads displayed on pages relating both to the general subject and specific exact terms.
- Analysing the publisher competition to determine how likely you are going to be to get your page ranked highly in the search engines in order to attract traffic, and lastly,
- The commercial intention of the internet users doing the searching.
As you can imagine – or have
discovered for yourself – this is extremely time consuming and
leaves a lot of room for errors. I have made all the mistakes
possible to make here. I have got spent months getting myself ranked
highly for a term only to discover it does not monetise well; I have
ignored a term because I incorrectly analysed the competition; I have
chased down a keyword I could never rank for because the competition
is too high. I have paid a lot of money for software that was
supposed to do the job for me and proved too difficult and inaccurate
to use. You name it – I have made the mistake. Why did I spend
money on keyword research software to do it for me? Easy:
I Hate Keyword Research.
I genuinely hate doing keyword research. I mean – I really, really hate it. It is boring, repetitive and gives you (until you get paid) absolutely no satisfaction as a writer. I hate it with a passion. If google ever get their latent semantic search engine working properly (probably never) I will not need to do it quite so exactly but until that time – you don't do it and you are missing out on substantial income.
And even if they ever do - you will still need to analyze the search volumes, income potential and look at the competition as regards quality instead of rankings. So - keyword research is a part of making money on the Internet - whether we like it or not - anyone who tells you otherwise is full of shit.
Whether you are doing keyword research for your own blogs, for SEO, ppc article marketing, whatever - this is what you want to find – keywords that have high search volumes, high earning potential, high commercial intention, high advertiser bids - and low publisher competition.
So, you can use all the free keyword
research tools, such as the google keyword research external tool to find these terms and manually check the competition. You will eventually find them and
make some money. But – you will discover that for every 500 terms
you research, only 10 of them will fit your criteria and 5 of those
were mistakes. Trust me – I have spent countless hours doing this
to the point I could barely make myself sit at the computer.Eventually you are going to discover that you have had enough of doing that job. In fact - it may not even be cost effective for you - I just hated it myself and could no longer force myself to do it.
So – I started looking for automatic keyword research software that would perform the task for me. Dear me. What a journey that turned out to be. I have said before that 99% of the Internet is garbage. Well – the same applies to the automatic software out there. I have wasted as many hours trying to make some of this software work as I have done doing keyword research.
After much despair, hundreds of wasted hours and literally thousands of dollars pissed up the wall, I eventually found a piece of software I can recommend without reservation. I have recommended other bits and pieces before – but they always only did part of the job, or have ended up being so prevalent that thousands of other people were using exactly the same approach and finding exactly the same niches and keywords.
I once set up four sites – all using exact search terms that I was targeting and discovered no less that 11 people had a similar collection of sites and were doing exactly the same thing as me. I could barely tell the difference between their sites and mine. And they all set them up within a few days of mine. Needless to say – I canceled my subscription to that service immediately.
This is one of the things I like about the software I am recommending here - it is relatively expensive - so it is not going to be used by hundreds of thousands of people - ever. Most people are going to baulk at the cost - which is what makes it so valuable.
This is the best keyword research software – IMEye
It is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination ($197 a month) and I recommend that – if you decide to buy it you have several days – at least three in a row to learn it and start using it. It is a very powerful tool that will analyse the search volumes, potential income and competition – not just for adsense, but it runs different criteria for affiliate sales such as Amazon, Ebay and numerous others.
It then hunts down exact domain name matches, and you can literally find a term, evaluate the competition using another free tool that confirms the first analysis, buy the domain (or write a hubpage – or both - my advice) and be up any running within a few minutes – assuming you can write the content.
If you devote a little time to understanding what it is doing for you, this piece of software will be paying for itself almost immediately. I am not going to fool you – it doesn't do everything for you – you will have to learn it, understand what it is doing, create the content and do a minimal amount of promotional work. Within two days of buying this – I had several domains and hubpages ranking highly for some high paying search terms without building a single link to them.
Having an exact domain name for a search and an exact hubpage title is very powerful – especially when used together.Don't bother searching through my hubs - I have more than one account here.
IMEye uses a completely different algorithm to any other piece of keyword research software out there, has a base of over 5 million (and growing) keywords to analyse and will almost certainly provide you with unique opportunities because - you set the parameters you are searching for and it will tell you what is realistic and achievable - within seconds.
Seriously – go watch their video and
take a flyer - spend the $197 – you will never look back. They give you 7 days to trial it and I actually trust these guys - they are one of the few I have come across that actually provide customer service. It works- no messing.
Content
If content is not your strong suit – please contact me for a quote to provide high quality unique content on any subject. No matter your niche – strong, good quality content is vital to your success. There are too many crappy, empty, useless sites out there.
Please do not do that – write content that adds value and you will always do better than adding content for the sake of it. I am in this for the long haul and – barring a few disasters – always try and add value when I create a site or a hubpage. If you wish to make money online, this is one of the keys, and I also offer a number of link building services as part of my internet marketing package.

Sounds like a good investment. Does it work on a mac? The bane of my life...
I always use wordtracker and Google Keywords Tool.
Lol, Mark, if you ever want to outsource keyword research, think of me! It is my favorite part of the whole IM business, seriously, SY
Hi Mark,
First off, I love your posts! I still reference the one you wrote about getting your hub on the first page of Google.
I agree with the other posters, this is a very expensive tool. I personally work with free tools and just did a big blog post last week about keyword reasearch:
http://id8.ca/3-min-seo-tip-keyword-research/
The tool I have had the most success with is Market Samurai. The keyword research portion of the tool is free and it is more robust than the Google Keyword tool (includes extra data points) however it is probably not nearly as good as the tool you are recommending. But its free and does not have a three day learning curve!
Keep up the quality information Mark. I read everything you publish!
Cheers
Jesse
Mark,
I appreciate so much the information you have supplied regarding 'keyword searches' which I know absolutely nothing about. I am, now, after 20 months on Hub Pages just beginning to investigate what is needed to become a serious writer for the internet{meaning to make money}. I love writing! But, I have found, "it's not enough to bring home any income". I am considering purchasing a software program but as with all 'ignorance' I am at at loss for which one to invest [what I consider 'mega funds'] in. Thank you again, for the suggestion; I'm going to check it out. Best to you, always,
Thank you for your info and help but it is way out of my money.
I use Niche Refinery for keyword research. This is one of the free tools available when you join The Keyword Academy, which only costs $33 per month.
Wow, thank you for great information, I guess I will have to cruise in ignorance for a while longer. bookmarking and sharing, voted up and useful
Thank you for the information, I should try it.
Nice hub Mark...unfortunately IMEye is a little pricey for me.
You certainly have a way with words - but better than being blind. A very interesting article, I will have to save up.
$197/mo? why monthly? how much total? how many months? I could see $197 total if it does the job. If keyword research is like math, maybe it's better to learn the times tables before buying a calculator. I hope to get to the point where I could justify the expense. Until then, thanks again Mark. I will definitely keep this in mind when I get there.
At this point Mark, I'm going to speak in my role as a software engineer, not a "religious nut" ;) ...
The "Software as a Service" business model is a wonderful thing for this type of software. It's not like a word processor where the functionality never changes.
A "per month" price model is a valid for software that is constantly updated. They are incentivized to keep the money coming in by continually updating their database and algorithms.
If it's suddenly not useful (say you decide to quit writing articles, for example) you can stop paying, but as long as you need it, you always have the latest and greatest.
If they are a professional outfit, they will have ongoing server expenses, programmers, DBAs and network engineers on staff to keep their service running.
If it as good as you say, $200 a month is a reasonable (and tax deductible in the US) expense, if it does indeed make you money. The software guys have to meet expenses, obligations and make a reasonable profit.
That's a lot of money. I wonder if it's as good as the Niche Refinery, which is just $33 a month through the keyword academy.
Nice and useful article:) I'll bookmark this for future reference. Thanks Mark :)
Wow! This shows me that KeyWord searching has become VERY complicated/difficult. Thanks for what you taught me in this one. Wish I could afford the software to draw traffic to my stuff on personality types. Blessings to you Mark in your excellent efforts!
Always learning and a lot of it from you. I am bookmarking in case I ever get above $2 a day. Thanks again.
Mark you've convinced me that this could definitely be a game change in my efforts to create online income, much appreciated!
Hi Mark, keywords is my struggle too but under no circumstances I have now the money to pay for this. With only 11 bucks from my hubpages so far, I'll be probably mathusalemic by the time I'll rich $200 per month to pay for it. One lesson I learned from your hub, probably the most important one, that without a keywords reserch I'm not gonna make any money writing online. Thanks for it.
Hi Mark, the more I read hubs like this, teh more my little mind seems to understand how important keywords are, but also how important content is (and possibly always will be) this would be great software, and on my list of things to get someday.
Big Man....Big Shot...! Thanks for an informative hub.
A lot of good information. Thanks for the recommendation. Your writing style is smooth.
you must be an affiliate of this company to push it so hard, why shuld the majority of hubbers waist there money on this when there are much, much cheaper options for less than $35. You must be madspending that amount- I noticed you didnt say what sort of money you can expect to earn by using it.
I'm happy with my keyword research tool already. This is way beyond what I'm willing to pay for a keyword tool.
Great information. I'll be giving this a more thorough look. Thanks Mark Knowles.
kindest Regards,
Tony S.
I always use wordtracker and Google Keywords Tool but i think i should try this tool too.
I'm using Market Samurai and it does the job. But this sounds intriguing. I gave ya some karma good article.

This product does sound tempting, but it is way out of our price range.
We share your dislike of key work research. It is hard to decide which aspects are the most frustrating. One of our pets is when we find the exact words that fit our article or hub, and those words are 'good payers' - but then we find there is a ton of competition.
Our tip for people who have not got the money for this product is to concentrate on writing about topics that you find truly interesting, and include detail. At the beginning of this summer we wrote an article for our website on what to wear for ladies' day at the races (horse racing). As well as fashion tips, we gave the dates and venues of ladie's days at all major race courses in the United Kingdom. This did take time to research, but it was nowhere near as boring as keyword research. It did pay off!
So Mark, sorry to hog your comment space, but we are really echoing what you always say: you have to work to make money.
Thanks for another good hub.
