62The Disadvantages Of Running An Internet Business :: Why Most Internet Businesses Fail
If you have spent any amount of time researching Internet businesses and home based opportunities you have probably already heard the many advantages of working from home. However, what most people fail to think about are the disadvantages that running a business on the Internet presents.I speak from personal experience here and there are some frustrations that you must take into consideration when deciding if you want to run a business on the Internet.
If most would-be entrepreneurs had known about the obstacles before they entered, more people may have been able to better prepare for running their operations online rather than giving up before their efforts began to pay off. One of the biggest disadvantages of running an Internet based business from your home is that you are easily distracted. It is all too easy to go looking for a piece of information and discover yourself down a dead end two hours later.
Self discipline is not the strong suit for a lot of people (me included), which makes running your own business on the Internet incredibly difficult. If you are constantly being distracted from your work, your business will begin to suffer.
Without realizing it you could end up giving away your entire day to distractions. When you want to run your business online, you must make sure that you remain disciplined and focused on your daily business tasks rather than what may be going on around you - and that includes off-line as well as on-line distractions.
Competition. Being involved in a very competitive industry is another disadvantage that running your business on the Internet presents. Thousands of marketers are looking to support themselves from the Internet, which means that you will have a few other determined people to compete against. If you go into a potentially profitable market you can expect to face even stiffer competition.Most people are drawn to the glamorous, high-paying niches. Be aware though - getting into a health related or weight loss niche is all but impossible without a large budget.
Learning curve. There is a steep - and I do mean steep - learning curve associated with running your business from the Internet as well. If you are not currently tech-savvy, you may have to devote hours of your precious time just learning how to operate your own website and set up a wordpress blog.
Even if you are technology inclined, you may still have to spend months learning the ropes before you begin seeing results from your efforts. This learning curve is what pushes a large number of business owners away from the Internet.I can all-but guarantee - unless you are extremely lucky or have a big budget - you are not going to see much reward in the first three months.

W. O. R. K. Yes - the four letter word - it is work - there is no magic bullet here. Another disadvantage of running your business online is that the buck always stops with you. Whether you are making money with video or whatever way you choose to run your business - WORK is involved. Sorry. Rather than having someone above you that you can answer to, you are going to be at the top of the chain. Being at home all day, your family is going to add to the amount of questions you have to answer and deal with.
From your clients and potential customers, as well as your children, you can easily get overwhelmed by the amount of pressure being placed on you.

This home business, does it work for Nigerians, we hear so many of them and we just decide to get involved at the end of the day we don't receive the money. Can someone explain if this internet or home business. Is it also meant for people from Nigeria. Are the innocent ones also neglected? Why Nigerians, i mean we should be given opportunity for home business also, especially for those who do not have jobs at hand and need something to help themselves at home. Nigerians are hardly listed among all countries allowed to do home business or internet business. Even if they do, money will not be sent.

Hi, Mark - Of all the hubbers (and bloggers) writing articles about making money on the Internet, and I have read literally hundreds of these articles, you write the most informative and at the same time easy-to-understand articles of any of them.
You are spot on with this hub and I would also add PATIENCE to the mix. Too many folks seem to view the Internet as little more than an easy get-rich-scheme taking little effort and paying off right away. WRONG!

Hello Mark, I have to say that distractions is a big one for me. Having to tend to family and a son with a disability, I often become either to busy or distracted to stick with an online buisness. However, I am certainly not going to give up. Thank you so much for a fine article.

I've been working at home for 5 years. I have a work computer and a leisure computer. When I sit at my work computer I'm working and focused and my family know I'm working. When I'm at the other computer my family know I'm available. It works for me.
That is a great idea. :) My problem is the distractions I find online.
Hey Mark, how are you doing this days? I also find myself distracted sometimes :D though it´s my off-line work what keep me away from the Internet businesses the most - I guess I still need the physical contact with new and different people everyday LOL
In the end (be it online or off-line businesses) the 4 letter word is always there for us. At least I never experienced the feeling of having money falling into my hands without some W.O.R.K. from me :)

This is an excellent hub and points out all the areas that people should be aware of before working online, so that they go in with their eyes wide open.
I don't think it should necessarily put people off having their own internet business, but forewarned is forearmed as they say and it will mean that you are much more effective from the start, as you know some of the pitfalls to avoid.
