Ten Best Science Fiction (Sci fi) Movies
80I am probably going to upset a few people with my selections
of the best science fiction movies of all time, but I am a big boy and can
take the criticism. I was going to do a five best, but I remember how bad I
felt after finishing my five best science fiction books and realizing how many
I had left out, so this is a ten best instead. I am sure I will miss a few un-missables as well.
On the whole – science fiction works better
in written form than it does in film format – but this is not always the case.
The reason I suspect is that the special effects to create imaginary worlds
went straight from “not quite good enough,” to “amazing and over powering,” in
a very short space of time. Which means that my favorite science fiction seems
to stem from that time where the effects were “quite good, but not
overpowering,” and in a few cases “so bad they added to the film.” These are in
no particular order except for the first, which I consider to be the best
science fiction movie ever. Today - I tend to change my favorite regularly.
For me, a science fiction movie needs three elements: It needs a great big dose of “what if,” it needs to be a good commentary on now, and it needs some hard science that does not exist yet, but could be plausible in the future.
Blade Runner
Ridley Scott is one of the few directors I admire and the "tech-noir/cyberpunk," Blade Runner - I don't know - I just made that up - is a classic sci-fi movie. Harrison Ford in an unusually "not all about me," role as an unwilling cop who hunts down and kills rogue "replicants," which are artificial human beings used as slaves in the off world colonies.
All too believable that when the technology to create artificial humans is developed - it will be developed by the corporations who will abuse them for profit. I have no trouble believing it anyway. Call me cynical if you will.
This is one of the best sci-fi films ever made, the atmosphere is wonderful, the acting superb and the special effects "just enough," to be believable. Plus it has Sean Young in it. Amazon sell this for under $10 - buy it - do not rent it - you will watch this one over and over.
2001 A Space Odyssey
Another classic that should be bought and not rented because it is so re-watchable. The plot, well, if you are a fan of explosions and action in your sci-fi you are going to be first of all disappointed and then amazed that you could get so much out of a movie without any explosions. The bad guy is, well, I will leave you to discover the bad guy for yourself. If you have not watched this movie – you are not a sci-fi fan.
Ground breaking for it’s time even watching it today it is hard to believe this film was made way back in 1968. Gawd that makes me feel old. Stanley Kubrick is a genius and the special effects are once again, “just good enough,” to be believable.
Absolutely has to be on any one’s top sci-fi movies list. The music is perfect, the film a testament to minimalist and simple shots, but answering the question everyone always wants to know. You know – the answer to life, the universe and everything……
Dark Star
Dark Star is one of those that missed out on the mainstream viewers, but I would certainly put it on my top ten list. The premise is simple. In order to facilitate easier colonization of the solar system, Dark Star’s job it to clear away any planets that might obstruct that goal.
Dark star, like all good sci-fi, is dark, both in storyline and humor. If you have not seen it, I will not give away the plot – but go buy it and be once again surprised at the difference between this and most of today’s films. The wonderful thing about these films is the amount a viewer can get out of a movie with some very simple effects. I think a lot of that has been lost on recent years with the ease of making effects - and too many rely solely on the effects instead of genuinely creating an atmosphere or telling a compelling story.
Directed by John Carpenter, this was his first movie and his best as far as I am concerned. Low budget, fantastic atmosphere and very funny if you like your humor dark
The Fifth Element
I know, I know - a frigging French director, clothes by Jean Paul Gaultier; Bruce Willis and Chris Tucker starring. What can you do? Luc Besson is a genius, this is a masterpiece and – it is great fun. Gary Oldman in his best role, Milla Jojovich looking like........ Milla Jojovich. Bad guys in all directions, an unimaginable evil approaching and we need saving by a Taxi Driver. Wonderful stuff.
Much as I hate Bruce Willis – in a non-personal way – this is an excellent film. Well shot, well directed and the outlandish Gaultier costumes just work. Funny as well – the classic cops at a McDonalds ”fly through,” window are too real and the farcical way events unfold are also too real.
Absolutely another one to buy not rent because you will
watch it again and again. Another classic science fiction movie and no shortage of explosions....
The Matrix
I nearly didn’t include the Matrix because the two sequels were – excuse my French – absolutely fuckin’ awful, horrible parodies and the worst sort of crap science fiction ever produced. OK – now I have got that out of my system, can you tell I was disappointed in the second and third Matrix? They were sooo bad it was almost enough to turn me off of the original, which was actually very, very good.
It has the necessary requirements for being one of the top ten science fiction films of all time: a big dose of “what if;” great effects that do not detract from the storyline, some fresh new tech and – oddly enough for Keanu Reeves – the actors did not get in the way of the story.
Too often in sci-fi, one ends up seeing the same actors who were in a ”mainstream,” movie last week and it detracts from the movie. Not so in the case of the Matrix. Definitely another one worth buying, but do not bother buying the box set or the sequels – they are utter garbage.
The Terminator
I loved this film when it came out and, although it stars Arnold, that is OK – he was no where near as famous and squeaky clean back then. I must have watched it 25 times since then. A cyborg sent back from the future to kill the leader of the human resistance before he is born? How could you resist? Crappy special effects do not detract in any way, shape or form from this movie.
All the actors – including Swarzenegger - were almost unheard of at the time the film was made and – judging from the poor effects they were on a tight budget, which just goes to show that the amount of money spent does not guarantee a success or failure. When I think of some of the massively expensive pieces of rubbish Hollywood turns out, and then compare them to this masterpiece on a shoestring, it makes you wonder.
The first sequel is also very good, but they go downhill from there. There does not seem to be any point in buying the more expensive box sets and I would only recommend the first two movies in the series. Just to confuse you, there are a number of mixed box sets with “special editions,” blah, blah, blah. They are all marketing junk to persuade you to spend more money. Buy “The Terminator,” and “Terminator T2,” none of the rest are worth the money.
As you may have guessed – the fact that there are several sequels and now a TV series, the “Sarah Connor Chronicles,” the first episode does not go all to plan…….
Forbidden Planet
No, and I do mean, no, list of the best science fiction movies can possibly be complete without the Forbidden planet. Not so much for the film itself, which is a wonderful example of the genre, but for the influence it had.
Without the forbidden planet, there would have been no Star Trek, and although there are no star trek movies on this list, star trek the TV series was instrumental in making sci-fi an acceptable film genre, but it all starts with this movie.
Classic sci-fi at it’s best, the film really does stand the test of time, and is as fresh today as the day it was released. A must-have in any serious science fiction fan’s collection of movies, if you have not seen this, go buy it now and be amazed at the quality of the special effects for 1956 and the electronic music.
This is actually a re-telling of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest,” but don’t let that put you off, this is an absolutely fantastic pop culture icon. Not to be missed.
Barbarella
Yes, I know another film that should not be on anyone’s favorite scifi movie list, but this was and is another classic. This is an interesting take on the sci-fi genre. Sort of a soft – really soft – porn science fiction movie with peace, love and hippy sensibilities, dude. Great film and absolutely worth the seven dollars (or less) that Amazon sell it for.
Jane Fonda really made some poor quality films and this one was up there. But - it is so bad it is good. That sounds unlikely, but trust me - this film is worth every penny. It has been a long time since I saw this one, but it popped into my head as a top ten and I couldn't let it go.
Of course - now I am slowly coming to the realization that I only have two more films and about 20 on the list, so the next two are going to be tricky because there is one I cannot not add.
1984
Nineteen Eighty Four is another classic. Not as fun and light as the preceding film, but makes this list, not because it is a fantastic film, which it is - although perhaps not as good as it could have been, but because it is, I believe, prophetic.
I very much see George Orwell's vision of the future coming to life. In real life. In small, insidious ways that slowly but surely erode the individual freedoms. The banks run the world now. I see that more and more clearly as I examine the way the system works. It is entirely based on debt and thought control.
I like to think I see it more clearly than some of my contemporaries because I opted out for a while. Opting back in required me to take a long hard look at the society we have allowed to be created for us. And i do not like it. I see these constant, little erosions of freedom all over the world. In the last decade, I have lived in the USA, the UK, Spain, and France, and the erosions are small, and different in each country and culturally acceptable to each individual country.
In the US, the federal reserve is placing the country so far in debt, it will never escape, and the "Patriot Act," stripped many small freedoms away. But that is OK - it was for your safety and freedom from radical Muslim terrorists.
In the UK, The Bank of England is placing the country so far in debt it will never escape and the country is now covered in CCTV cameras that watch every bodys every move. But that is OK - because it was to reduce crime and offer protection from the roaming gangs of unhappy, unemployed teenagers who lost their jobs to the Polish immigrants. That is sarcasm unless you were thinking I actually feel this way.
In Spain, unemployment is over 20% and the rest of the employees work for the Government Inc, which is being propped up by the European Central Bank, which is placing Europe so far in debt it will never be able to escape. Most Spanish workers now do "make work," like moving civic statues from one square to anther and back again next month and the Spanish workers are being "undercut" by the North African immigrants. In France the same thing is happening, and now we have German troops stationed in the North of the country. The first time since WWII.
There are measures afoot to create a world bank and a world government - most of which already has the financing and infrastructure already in place to take over from the National governments. And all those little erosion in all the different countries will be adopted by the others - and it will have been a big erosion.
The next step will be to insist that currencies become backed by gold once again to "solve the problems" we have. Two thirds of the world's gold reserves are owned by the same bankers the national governments are up to their eyeballs in debt with. George Orwell was right - a few years late, but watch this film and tell me I am wrong. We are being played like symphony orchestra by a very small, banking elite and I fear the worst.
Buy both films if you have the money to spare - if not, the later one probably best captures the despair, but they are both superb. Watch this film and complain to your congressman that your email is freely available to anyone in power. Complain to your MP that you are sick of having a friggin camera follow you all day long. Do whatever you need to do to prevent this from happening. Tear a CCTV camera off the wall, refuse to pay your income taxes, Stop borrowing!
Classic Sci Fi Movie Collections
And dammit – now I have to add my last film, but I am going to cheat and point out some classic collections of movies. Turner Classic Movies and some pother studios have put together a few sci-fi box sets. And although they sneakily add a couple of crappy films that no one would buy into the mix, this gives me an excuse to plug all those films I couldn’t add because I was limiting myself to 10 – like Soylent green, Running man, Planet of the Apes, Roller Ball, The Fly and zillions of others, including Logan's run, the Omega man and Westworld - all of which should have been on my top ten list. Next time, I just do a list - I don't care how long it gets.
So – I know I am cheating, but I really hated feeling I had left so much out on my five best science fiction books. Christmas is approaching and any of these box sets will make a fantastic gift for the sci-fi buff in your life. Hope my wife is reading…..
PrIce from high to low - All great collections

I'm on board for most of your choices, but surprised that Alien didn't make the cut.
I'm surprised you didn't include "The Blob!" Just kidding. Nice selection.
I grew up watching THEM! and Forbidden Planet and even did an essay in school about it and The Tempest. Got an "A"!!!
I just saw 2012 and loved the special effects but the story itself, with a few exceptions, is pretty predictable. But the premise, while impossible, is interesting, kind of like The Day After - it couldn't happen, but what if it did????
Great list. Solaris, the original Russian version of that movie would have been a good inclusion as well. Maybe also 5 Million Years to Earth. Campy, but fun!
Cheers from Spain!

Great Hub, Mark. I haven't seen Dark World, Solyent Green, or Forbidden Planet, but will check them out. I own the rest of these movies and the one my friends always claim they haven't seen is Westworld (Michael Crichton is awesome). I gotta ask, what about Starship Troopers?
Sometimes I wish I didn't know about the Federal Reserve and the United Nations, as Joe Pantoliano's character in the Matrix states, "Ignorance is bliss."
Well I guess I'm the guy who agrees with you about Blade Runner. Great Hub, I've seen them all and enjoyed them. I'm not sure I would have included Barbarella in the top 10, but I would go with the rest.
I think you will have to put together a list of the 100 best science fiction movies Mark. There really are too many good ones. I'm with you on most of these but would def exchange Barbarella and 84 with either Mad Max, Escape from New York, The Fly or even Clockwork Orange. Glad to see that Fifth Element made the cut though ah there is another I would add even though a bit Zombie-ish 'Resident Evil'...
hope you're well
regards Zsuzsy
I'm not a big fan on science fiction movies but you listed several that I really liked, so maybe I am a bit of a fan. I loved The Matrix, The Terminator and a couple of others. Good hub.
Excellent choice of movies here, I especially enjoyed the Matrix movies and the Terminator movies.
Blade Runner is one of my all time favorite movies and I am so glad to hear somebody else besides me say that the Matrix sequels sucked!
And since everyone else is adding movies to your great list, I'll leave you with my one suggestion, "Brazil".
My favourite is Blade Runner
Second, the Matrix
Very good hub ! thanks !! :)
thanks for the info Mark, I've watched some of them, and will watch the rest. Are they recommendable for children too ?.
Great write-up Mark. I'm so glad someone mentioned "Dark Star." Highly under-rated and quite an excellent film despite the skimpy budget. Funny, frightening, and just downright weird. I think you nailed it on the order too.
Have to agree with your list..I've enjoyed most of them, expecially Blade Runner and Terminator. Oh, missed Dark Star too (too young for that one I guess) lol Seriously, great list and I'll watch the ones I missed!
i'd have to disagree with your bottom two (barbarella and 1984).
Barbarella because I truly believe there are much much better movies that you've passed over. Aliens (not Alien, which is more HORROR), King King 1933, A Godzilla film - perhaps, Planet of the Apes, etc
1984 because the movie, imho, can't even LIGHT a candle (let alone HOLD one) compared to the novel...
decent list otherwise though and i cant take too much issue with the other films you have here
Have seen most of the films you mention and the ones at the end of the hub too. I guess my favs would have to be Blade Runner, 2001, Forbidden Planet, The Terminator 1 & 2 (I agree that the rest aren't worth watching and haven't even seen the tv series, don't figure they're worth it) Soylent Green, Planet of the Apes (Charleton Heston) and The Omega Man plus a few others. And the books are always better than the movie versions.
What about the original Star Wars. Campy, badly acted and predictable but I can't go a whole year without watching it
Terminator: yes 2001: yes 5th element: great movie but not on my list probably unless is was a top 25 list. the rest are crappy IMO. Ummm... Star Wars is all i can say. Atleast 1 of the 6 would be in a 10 list if not all original 3. Star trek also had a few great movies. alien needs to be there.
I would have added The Day The Earth Stood Still (the original), and Metropolis.
I like fifth element I always fought that film was underrated.
What about Serenity? Very clever.
Always difficult with any top ten list, you can please all the people, all the time. Have to agree on Blade Runner though. What about Logan's Run and Planet of the Apes, both innovative and novel concepts but then who do you push out.
The Fifth Element never seems to get enough respect. So much is going on throughout that movie - it needs to be viewed several times to take it all in. Chris Tucker's Ruby Rhod is hilarious. We actually creep closer to that style of reporting every day.
2001 by good old Stanley deserves a place in the top 10 as well...
I can't believe you left out one of the best foundation movies in science fiction-The Day the Earth Stood Still (original version only please).
It showcased every fear that American society exhibited in the 50s. Fear of science, fear that science wouldn't save us, same for the military, fear of the outsider, fear of a secret agent insider, fear of women, fear of technology, fear of the removal of technology, fear of other countries, fear of the government, fear of a world government, and on and on.
And finally, the greatest fear of science fiction fans, that aliens don't care if we live or die, evolve or blow ourselves up so long as we don't screw with their business. They are Republicans! LOL
A good selection of movies. I'm a HUGE fan of the Back to the Future movies and Will Smith in I, Robot. There is a new movie out at the moment (in the UK anyway) called Surrogates, starring Bruce Willis. If you haven't seen it, it's a brilliant, science fiction must-see.
I also hate Bruce Willis in most things, but he is good here. A great selection. I am very lucky my house mate has all of them! I only had to read your list! Thanks Mark well done as usual and may I say a bit unexpected.
I think the End of the Sixties and early Seventies was the Best time for these Movies Because of Planet of the Apes and 2001 a space oddessy
Mark
You got one out of ten anyway, Forbidden Planet.
You missed the original War of the Worlds, This Island Earth, The Thing, The Day that the Earth Stood Still, the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Them.
The sequels to these movies didn't measure up to the original.
I like your selection of movies. Thank you for sharing.
Good selection of movies Mark. I am surprised that you did not include however, The original film "The Day the Earth Stood Still." I have always thought it would be amongst the classics in any Sci-Fi fans library. The one with Keenau Reeves was pretty good also. It didn't measure up to the original though.
I like Fifth Element and The Matrix. I really like Contact and The Abyss, Star Trek and Event Horizon and Predator. But that is not all of them.
Like every movie on that list. Moon (2009) is also a film you might like.
Forbidden Planet was great.
Those are all great movies. Blade runner is good, but I have to be in a mood to watch it..the extended version is especially boring. Some of my faves-Pitch Black, Signs, Enemy Mine, Soldier, Soylent Green
I appreciate that you listed the criteria for what constitutes a scifi movie. Not surprised to see Bladerunner on there. I think at some point it was decided by someone that it should be on everyone's best of scifi list. I've never heard of Forbidden Planet but if it is indeed the predecessor for Star Trek than it must be awesome. Overall that's an interesting list.
My favorite are DarkStar and forbidden planet :)
Great Post A+
Romper20
Are you kidding? Where is The Day the Earth Stood Still? What about Metropolis?
I have seen Dark Star. It is cute, nothing more. I think that John Carpenter is fantastic and needs to be included in the list. But Escape from New York and They Live, I think are MUCH better choices. Also, why did you not include any of the Star Wars films? I think that they did have some effect on the culture.
I would've added A Clockwork Orange, Alien and The Thing (both versions) but it's still a damn fine set of movies.
Stellar Sci Fi collection :) My preference for sci fi were the movies made in the late '70s early '80s with a few exceptions (The Fifth Element for sure). Thank you for sharing!
Wow! 1984, Barbarella, and the 5th element make it, but Preditor, Alien, The Xmen, and the newest Ster Trek get letf out? The 5th element was a fantasy spoof! I would have put Battle beyond the Stars here before Barbarella!

Somebody in this house agrees wholeheartedly with you about Bladerunner... and it isn't me! Science fiction has never been my genre, but I can see the intelligence and ingenuity that goes into it.
