Best Indian Recipes - Chicken Curry
By Mark Knowles
Indian Recipes
Indian food is one if the healthiest types of cuisine, and there are many vegetarian Indian recipes to choose from. Authentic Indian curry recipes vary widely from region to region, and this is a compilation of the best easy Indian recipes on hubpages. Some of them are meat based as well as vegetarian and they originate from all over India.
There are probably as many Indian curry recipes as there are chefs and every one has their own preferences. South Indian recipes are extremely popular, although some of the so-called Indian recipes actually originated in the UK, where we have adopted Indian cuisine as our own and invented dishes such as Chicken Tikka Masala, and there is even an area of Birmingham, one of the UK's largest cities, called the “Balti triangle,” because of the proliferation of Balti houses.
Balti is actually a Pakistani word, but
– that doesn't matter – to us Brits – The Balti is an Indian
meal. Balti houses are extremely (or used to be) cheap to eat at
because they rarely serve alcohol – you must usually bring your own
and pay a corkage fee. Regardless – these are some of my favorite
Indian recipes. I hope you enjoy.
Appetisers and starters
It is hard to put a number of the amount of different appetizers available in Indian cuisine. Where it is south Indian or north, the variety is staggering. This is a varied selection from a variety of people. Some of them are my own recipes, some of them are well proven traditional recipes, and on the whole – they are vegetarian. Most Indian appetisers are vegetarian, but there are a few meats in this collection.
Often I find the easiest way to buy the spices for these dishes is on line. Unless you are lucky enough to live in a big city with an Indian community, you are just not going to be able to find them any other way. Fortunately, the dried spices and pastes last a long time and Amazon or Ebay will ship them very quickly.

Curries and other Entrées
Once again, the variety is staggering, and one man's “Oh my god, my mouth is on fire and I am going to die you total bastard!” curry is another man's “shrugs and asks for the hot sauce bottle” curry, and a lot of that is acclimatisation.
On the whole – because there is a lack refrigeration in much of rural India where many of these recipes originate, the spice level is high and most genuine Indian curry is extremely hot. I like that but if you are more accustomed to a milder taste, there are some “westernized” recipes mixed in with these.
Once again - buying the spice mixes online is probably the best option and it is very difficult to beat some of the ready made mixes such as Pataks or Kohinoor.

Breads and side dishes
I am sure you do not need me to tell you that there is another stunning variety to choose from. Indian cuisine is very regional, and – lest we forget – India is a big country. Unlike the USA where it is perfectly normal to ship tomatoes 3,000 miles in order to have tasteless, out-of-season garbage on the grocery store shelves, Indian cuisine has developed around what was available in that region, and thus varies quite drastically.
Once again – these are mostly
vegetarian and I recommend buying the special ingredients online
unless you are close to an Indian or Pakistani community with an
Indian store. We are lucky to have a number of Indian writers here on hubpages and many of these are genuine Indian recipes

Sweets
Indians love sweets and the suburbs around Birmingham are littered with sweet shops that sell home made sweets and pakoras, piled high in the window.
Once again – many of these are original authentic Indian recipes not generally found anywhere else and some of the ingredients can be hard to come by unless you live in a biog metropolitan city. The ingredients may also need to be looked up as there is sometimes not an equivalent word in English.
There is an equivalent taste though. :)

Great and interesting.... I'm ready for a new adventure ...Peace :)
I'm impressed by your knowledge of Indian food! I'm Indian and have lived in UK years ago when Indian cuisine was in its infancy. As a child I remember going to an "Indian" restaurant in London which served food very different from what we serve at home! A recent visit was an eye opener, even the local pubs in small towns serve chicken tikka!
Looks like a great recipe collection.
Thanks all - I hope you go and try them all. :)
Thank you for your great hub. I know when you said about in India. All these dishes taste different. I am not keen on hot psicy food but ove the Mogul food which you get in the area of Rajestan. In Madras you look like a fire-spiding dragon. Oh it is hot.
Wow! Very interesting. Today I will prepare one of them.
If you would only tell me where to find a cook to come to my house and make these recipes, I would be in Nirvana! I love Indian food, but don't have time to cook. Thanks for the recipes, I may try one or two if I can find some 'spare' time!
