How I got my hub to be on Google's first page
94
Before I start, I will say this – I am not selling anything. There will not be an offer to buy my ebook at the end of the hub so you can learn my “secrets of success,” for a fee. Nor will I be selling a lifetime membership to my weekly newsletter so I can turn around and sell your email address to someone. Nothing to sell. Nothing sold here :D
I will show you how I got one of my hubs on the front page of google for a particular search term. That’s it, nothing to buy.
SEO Best Practices
Some good advice from Wil Reynolds.
Why I wrote this hub
I have written this hub in reaction to two things. First, it seems this is an oft-discussed topic, not just on hubpages, but all over the internet. How do I get more exposure? How do I get more traffic? How do I earn more money from my website? You have all seen it.
Secondly, I have written it in response to the staggering number of times I am approached either in the forums here or other sites, online generally, or via email by people saying things such as………Well….., “How I got my hub to be on google’s front page,” for one and others like “I can say this my adsense income is doubling each month and my affiliate sales have so far quadrupled :-) yipee!!”As to the last one, this did not come up in conversation, but was a poorly disguised attempt to get me to look at the person concerned’s website. I personally find these sort of promotional devices at best annoying and at worst offensive. Why offensive you may ask? Because it makes an assumption that I am stupid and thereby insults my intelligence, that’s why. It’s unqualified, and you don’t need to be a mathematician to work out that double 10 cents is still only 20 cents. Also, this one came up during a long thread that had digressed into a personal conversation and was interrupted by someone who had just read the title of the thread and jumped in to do some self promotion.Enough ranting Knowles, get on with it, I hear from the back. OK,OK,

How I got my hub on google’s front page:
- A minimum of 1500 words, of your own, purely original writing
- A minimum of 3 relevant video capsules (YouTube or Google)
- A minimum of 5 relevant non-copyrighted images
- At least 10 relevant, helpful links to other sources, each with your own 30-50 word description
- A news capsule (or highly-relevant RSS feed), or eBay Capsule if your topic is product-related
- 15 relevant tags, including 2-3 common misspellings or spelling variants (if any)
- Maximum 150 word succinct description of the utility of your Flagship Hub in the Summary Text (uncheck the Calculate Summary Automatically box)
- Excellent thematic and aesthetic organization - please use the Capsule Ordering setup to the right (or something similar) when laying out your Hub—trust us, it will look great when you enter all the content
- The content must not be copied from any other source, even if you have the rights to copy from that source. It must be 100% original, and not copied elsewhere after publication and payment, either.
- You should include all links in the Links Capsule, and the links should not be to “bad neighborhoods” (sketchy sites with adult, gambling or other questionable content or ads) or to affiliate sites
- Please break up your text into sections (using the Heading 2 text treatment for each section title) so that it is easy to read.
And if you do a search on google for the term ”2008 motorcycle guide,” you will find not one, but two of my motorcycle guides in the first few results (currently third and fourth.)
So why does this work?
Google’s algorithm.
I am not claiming to be some sort of internet marketing guru, but I asked myself a single, simple question:
“If I was google and wanted to provide the best result possible for a search term, what would I want to see at number one?”
I would want what everyone wants when they search for something on google –
The best quality, most relevant, best written, most well-informed, information packed, good looking web page on that subject.
So, google’s search algorithm is attempting to do that. How they do it exactly is a mystery, although I have no doubt there are thousands of companies telling you they have the secret and will sell it to you for a fee. And some of them may even have it – this week – because it changes all the time. Google spend millions of man hours and dollars developing and “tweaking,” it.
So, how would I rate a web page? I am not saying this is exactly how google do it, but here are some criteria I would use to rate a web page:
- How many good quality links to other useful, relevant resources does the page have? Or is it full of garbage links to affiliate sales sites or porn or spam or gambling?
- How much content is on the page? 2000 well written words that are relevant to the page title and tags or 50 keywords and a page full of advertising?
- How long does a visitor stay on the page? Do they click out after 20 milliseconds or do they stay for several minutes and actually use the page? Scary as it is, google are watching everything everybody does on the internet. Just take a look at the information provided in your google analytics account. They tell you practically the name, address, age and sexual preferences of every visitor to your site; how they found you, how long they stayed and where they went afterwards – Truly Scary.
- Do people return to that page? Do they book mark it and check back when they need information or links on that subject or do they click off never to return?
- How many good quality links are coming into the page? 10 good quality organically grown links that took a month to be put in place or 2000 lousy, paid for links that have nothing to do with the subject matter? If you have got the first four criteria right, this one will come – organically.
If you read the hubpages flagship hub instructions, they are there for a reason and will allow your hub/webpage/blog to fit these criteria and you will be found by google.
Some subjects are harder to achieve. The motorcycle guide, I would class as medium difficult. There are around 200,000 results for this term, so I am happy to be there. One of my other hubs - Forex Trading Guide - is harder to achieve it with.
Basically, the more money to be made from a subject, the more people there are trying to get their site above yours, but I also believe the only difference is it will take longer to get there.
I genuinely believe there is no need for keyword stuffing, long tail keyword phrase research or any other efforts that people use to cheat the system and get their garbage to the top of the results pile. If you write genuine information in a natural way about a subject, you will automatically have the magic number of keywords and phrases about the subject. Automatically, organically and best of all – for FREE!
99% of the Internet is Garbage
It’s true, 99% of the internet is garbage. How many times have you looked for a subject and found nothing but rubbish and advertising? Pages that stop you using the back button? Pages that have pop ups? Empty pages with nothing but affiliate links?
When I began doing research for my forex hubs, I almost despaired of finding any genuine information on the subject. I eventually spoke to a banker friend of mine who told me forex trading is the biggest rip off known to man – even the banks lose money doing it. But the internet and TV is chock-a-block full of people telling you otherwise.
As a writer and internet user, I have to ask myself whether I want to add more garbage to that pile or help to reduce it. I think we all do. Do you really want to be creating spurious pages full of rubbish aimed at generating page views that end up serving no purpose whatsoever other than a few ad clicks - maybe, or do you want to produce good quality, informative pages that draw people back to your writing? On top of that, it’s MY internet too and I want to be able to use it in a way that doesn’t make me want to throw my computer out the window the next time I get a pop up advertisement selling me a penis enlargement cream.
I have made my decision – I am not saying I will write a flagship hub every time I write one, but I will certainly be bearing these instructions in mind when I do. My writing in other places bears out the fact that this works. Search google for the term, “cubicle culture,” or "youcube," and see if you can find me. And thanks for the idea coolbreeze.

Very good seo techniques.
Wonderful, Mark. Provocative title, but no cheating! You gave us the goods.
I can use this advice and make my regular hubs do a hundred times better.
From the bottom of my hubbing heart, thank you very much!
Good info. I got on the first page in October by having a title that everyone searched for, a clearly written hub, and excellent photos (my How to Cook Pumpkin Seeds hub with How to Cook Fresh Pumpkins coming in second). It wasn't hard.
This will generally lift the quality of hubs, hopefully.
Sigh, why didn't I think of applying the flagship hub rules
to my regular hubs and make them better?
Better late than never, I guess. :)
Great info Mark! I, do agree that the more useful content, relevant tags, and such, help out Google rank.
I'm blown away by this hub, I laughed I cried I got excited.. especially love your comment about stop rambling mark after you went on about the guy insulting your intellegence .. I laughed.. the tip on using the capsule ordering setup form to the right.. made me stop and thing..huh whats that got to do with- then a bell went off (I later found out that was the microwave- coffee's done) and I realized something new.. duh, I've been importing capsules on the fly as I add stuff then when I have to update I have to go trhough the escruciating process of moving one from the bottom up.. but I realized I can just build the outline first based on my word file.. brilliant, your a god send!
Mark,
Great advice on how to build a better hub page, I believe it can be applied to many type of web pages.
You are a motivator. 2008 Motorcycle Guide is number one and number 2 in Google.
I will take a picture of my Harley and put it in mysite. I just upload to my server my son's bike, is a HUSQVARNA - FS 450
It is to fast for me.

Thanks for all these good informaion.
Excellent advice. You may be able scam, cheat, or short cut your way to the top but your time there will be short. Quality always wins out in the end.
Excellent hub, quality information and delivered with finesse and style.
Good information,
I am new here so taking a look around.
Thanks for sharing.

Very informative ! thanks !
Thanks for that Mark, we all have a lot to learn. Just wondering I know you can use new tube videos But is there a way of putting up your own movies that we take on a camera ourself. I mean can I put a quicktime movie up on hub pages.
Would that work or not.
Fantastic news and tips Mark! Really!!
:)
Mark,
I did smile when you told the twit to stop having you on. Your start was, as always to my way of thinking humorous.
It annoys me intensely when they tell you it's free then at end of 300 pages of gobble "It's only >>>>>>>"
This is the most informative hub I have read, thank you so much. I have not bothered about earning an income from any of the sources. I believe you have to do your apprenticeship first and learn how you the master does it. You are gradually teaching me. You will have to put up with the gray matter.
I have printed to read and study.
Thank you for a great start to 2008
Yes. I agree with MrMarmalade, couldnt believe my eyes when i failed to come across and E-Book. It felt wrong somehow.

Thank you Thank you Thank you Mark!! One of my New Year's Resolutions is to create my Hubs along the flagship guidelines!! It just makes sense and will raise the quality of our Hubs all the way around!! Thank you so much for sharing!! Blessings Always, Earth Angel!!
Mark -
Although I am not a top hubber, nor am I ranking much with google right now... I am convinced right off that you are right-on.
I simply came here to write that which is relevant to my interest. In my little bit of alexa research, I found this site had good traffic. I figured, if I am going to write, I want what I write, to be read. It is that important of a topic to me. The potential for revenue is a big surprise.
I don't know where this will take me? What surprises me, is my scores for being a newbie? It must have to do with my 'epistles' I tend to produce. LOL I have been criticized for being long winded in my writing. Now, I see this has potential to be a positive.
From what I hear you saying -- I need to organize my Hubs. I am starting to realize this by just observation of others Hubs. Kenny, for instance like you, produce a visually pleasing Hub to the eyes of your readers. Always very fresh in appearance.
I plan on working on the technology, so that although I am lengthy, it wil be well blocked and visually engaging to my readers. I will also concentrate on my links.
Thank you. You have given us all valuable information that is very appreciated. You are a gentleman.

Thanks for the tips!
Great information....very useful to us.
Outstanding article Mark. Would you be willing to let us know how much traffic you are getting from google on this page and how well it is performing financially?
Thanks for the great advice!!
A very well done, direct, honest, informative article. Thank you!
Excellent article and the best part about it is that you are not selling anything at the end and even the links you have to your other sites are relevant and not just put there to increase your PR. Nice work.
Wow. I'm new to this hubbing thing and got a lot of articles posted in a relatively short period of time -- but the extent of my internet savvy basically stops there. As a professional writer, it is frustrating to be behind the eight ball on stuff like this.
Your list of "to do's" are a little intimidating, but perhaps if I take them one at a time I can make some headway.
Thanks for your detailed account of how to improve traffic and get a better hub score!
Handsome article knowles. Now me have to rethink on my strategy. Thanks
Thanks Mark...What the future holds for you depends on what you hold for the future...I recon you have a pretty good future.
Thanks Mark for sharing these tips. :-) As a newbie, I was quite surprised to see at one time that my hub "50 Inspirational Quotes for Teachers" was on Googles 3rd page. Also this reinforces my belief that it is better to write quality hubs than go for quantity. As the new year starts, its time to roll up the sleeves and get to working. ..with these guidelines in mind :-) THANKS AGAIN.
Happy New Year! All the best.
Thank you Mark for sharing this information. What a pleasure it was to glean helpful info without having to buy someone's self-promoting ebook that really doesn't give you the info advertised in the first place!
Looking forward to trying it out.
I've looked at Hubpages a lot over the last year or so and always backed off because of the huge amount of garbage. I didn't know that there were "flagship hub" guidelines, but their presence and your excellent hub are making me rethink possible membership. Thanks.
nice exposure. you win over digg when i search using you keywords.
Nice Hub as always Mark..
Hi Mark,
I like your post, it has a lot of good sound advice in it. The only thing I would say (and you did in fairness mention it yourself) is that some keyword phrases are more competitive than others. You mentioned Forex Trading Guide .
I used a tool called Wordze and its extremely useful at showing the relative competitiveness on a keyword phrase. I guess the point I'm making is that Google puts a lot of emphasis on inbound links to a document (web page). The more competitive a document, the more inbounds links it needs to get a page one ranking (generally speaking).
Anyway, good article - keep them coming!
Excellent hub, Mark. But I'm sure you already knew that. ;)
I agree with the views expressed in this hub. I have been surprised too finding some of my hubs in the front listing of google. A great hub has a mix of everything in a proportinate way and it shuold be written in simple language with original content. Thanx 4 providing valuable information.
Wow, that was a really great article. I hadn't actually seen the tips for creating a flagship hub yet, so that was extrememly helpful for me. Great to see that you can rank well for these sites. Thanks.
Absolutely the best - you're a Star Mark. Super hub and so very helpful, with much food for thought for a great number of hubbers - although these principles can be adapted elsewhere.
Thanx so much for sticking this right under our noses (meaning that we really have no excuse now to join or resign the garbage gang). Thanx for sharing in the best kind of way.
Very Good Hub. This is some of the best information I have gotten off these hubpages. I haven't concentrated so much on making money, but that doesn't mean I won't eventually. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Some good tips there Mark. Not sure about ignoring long-tail and keyword research. Some basic research will give you an indication of how winnable your targeted keywords are and how much demand there is. Just like "forex trading guide" is a tough one. Of couse publishing to an "authority" site like Hubpages is a great tactic to start with. Like your tips about including videos and pics and will try that with my hubs.
Best regards
Steve
Amen to all of the above. I've found that the pages and blog posts that I have had most success with (ignoring a few flukes) over my time doing this have been with pages that I have taken my time with and are usually topics in which I am genuinely interesting in. I've bookmarked your page as a reminder for when I get in over my head with cuckoo marketing ideas. :)
Hello Mr. Knowles, A great work indeed.I am with you in this, I really dont like to stuff up my pages with keywords, and want togive my readers original content.I am a writing aspirant myself, and have started on these blogs. I find this article very charming indeed. I understand and value the rules of copyright.
please find my blog here, and say what you think on it

This is real good info for Newbies and struggling Oldies
This is some excellent content sir. Thanks a bunch and I plan to incorporate these lessons into my hub.
One things that is very important for Search Engines like Google is the content of your articles/stories. You should always make sure that the readers can get something valuable from your site.
Anyways, thank you Mark for sharing this one. I hope someday my hub can make it to the first page of Google...^^
Excellent advice on an excellent hubpage and although this is my first day here with my first hubpage it really gives me something to aim for.
Many Thanks
Brilliant advice, Mark. What's the point of trying to trick the system? You are so right, no tricks will work for very long. Excellent well-researched and relevant content cannot be beaten in the long run.
Thanks Mark for such a well written and immensely useful hub - I want all the people I am coaching to read it because many of them spend way too much time on playing the keyword game in the hope that they can fool the system. Trying to get it over to them that even if they manage to rank number 1 it doesn't make any difference if all they have to offer is garbage anyway.
I am still new to hubpages so will study your advice and strive to give value in everything that I write.
Louisa
I read all of your'e written very nice. Thanks and god bless.
Thanx for sharing these useful info...DrPc-Global
Thank you for all the information it will help me in my future hub endeavors
Excellent hub, full of no bs information. I took a look at the hub in question too and that is really informative and professional, well done.
Excellent post. If people would spend them same amount of energy that they use trying to game the system on producing quality content, everyone involved would be better off.
All the best.
Thanks Mark
I have just put up a motorcycle speedway site http://speedwayracingaus.com ...(yes, I am a rev head too!) and will have to set up a speedway hub although I doubt whether I can match your great achievement.
Cheers
Tony
Thanks for the info. Very informative hub. I appreciate it!
Thanks for sharing Mark. I have been developing my on-line site Jaz Live Cash Culture http://jazlive.com into a Brand. I am still feeling for my niche. Being from the old school as far as marketing [door-to-door]; I have evolved to attending all sorts of socials and distributing self-made business cards for networking. I can hardly wait to share you HUB with my on-line associates!

You are my new hero! I just wanted to drop by and report on how I have done with you advice.
I am not on the top of google, but my pages are looking pretty good. My last two most recent Hubs, have done much better since taking your advice.
It IS more work, but well worth it. I am tickled with how my Hub looks after doing all that you have advised. I will be all ears:-)

I'm just getting started on Hubpages and have found your tips extremely useful. Many thanks!
What do you think about hubs page rank ? It seems to me its very hard to build it as you would on a regular blog.
Hi Mark, thank you. Not only are you true to your word about not trying to sell something, but the information you give is useful, easy to understand and implement. I am new around here and really appreciate the help to get started.
My hub does not use the info above, it is straight info, but I will definitely keep your info in mind for future hubs.
Thanks

thank u Sir
Thanks very much for this information, you have amazing ideas, and they can be implemented by anyone! Keep up the amazing work, I look forward to your other hubs.
great article- thanks for the insight to a "novice hubber"
Hey! Guess what? You were right. Not only was your article very very interesting but I stayed on your page thorughout the journey. The topic was relevant, interesting and very well organized. And yep, you know it....there goes the bookmark! Thank you Mark for some great tips. I might not have them all down, but I do intend to review them. Now let me get back to my page and tweak it a bit. Mark, great tips, just got on Hubs yesterday over here in the UK, by the way just googled your 2008 Mototcycle Guide and you are 4 and 5 here in the Uk. Will have to get cracking now and start a hub page !! Charlie
Great info - thanks. I just created my first Hub today and this will give me something to shoot for.

Cool thanks for sharing!!
Finally someone with good information who doesn't want to sell something. Thanks so much! You've provided a real service.
I am a graduate student studying Information Security and I find it interesting that the length for a well written hub page is about the same as the length of a typical academic paper. The length for academic papers runs a parallel with the requirements for journal publication. Thanks for the advice.
Thank you very much, I almost spent $10 on a e-book about the value of hubs and getting to the 1st page but it seems you did it all for me already, thank you very much.
Hi Mark, add me to the list of people fawning over your hub. And I say that with absolute honesty. What a treat! Funny and informative. I love it. Thank you for spelling it all out. Excellent tips that will help me improve! Best - Steph
Thanks you Mark,
When most of us start out on a project like this we find that there is so much material to go through it can easily become overwhelming. You've managed to cut to the chase and put it all in a context that doesn't require hours and hours of reading and researchjust to figure out. Which saves that time for doing the research and writing we're here to do.
Thanks again,
Steve
Wow! What a Hub! You've inspired about a gazillion comments in just a couple weeks. Do you feel the love?
I've yet to follow HubPages flagship hub instructions, and as a result, I haven't reached #1 or #2 on any of my hubs, either.
My problem is that if I tried to put up 1500 words, it would be nonsensical rambling. My writing is better when done short, and to the point. Then I link them together to create the broader discussion.
I guess I should go back to work and spend a couple weeks writing up the mother of all hub pages and see what happens.
Mark you have done a great job of this and I am very appreciative. Nothing sells like not selling, it woud seem. You may be coerced into doing that e-book or report after all. Thanks for sharing with the rest of us.
Anthony
Mark, in so many words you described the difference between 2 kinds of people
1 Those who have something good to offer viewers and those that don't.
2 Those who are willing to put forth effort to promote and share their product/service and those who want positive effects with little effort.
The ability to write a flagship hub will sift out both of these groups. After all, Who can BS for 2000 words about a worthless product/service? I mean you could I guess, but I don't think too many people would be fooled. by it
If you do have something really great to offer, you should just focus and take the time to do it. Yes, I'm included in that little sermon....:)
Thanks Mark
Allen
All good stuff. Personally, I can't stand u-tube and rarely if ever click on a movie link. I don't doubt that they help your SEO and all that, but in my experience, if 99% of the text/pic internet is garbage, that rises to 99.99% of internet videos. That's why I was disappointed in the Flagship Hub initiative. It seems to militate against quality writing. Pity ;)
I love your hub, especially the part about the internet garbage, it's so true.
YouTube isn't the #3 rated site on the entire internet for nothing, you know. For every person who refuses to watch a YouTube video because they think it is a senseless waste of time, There are a thousand more who spend hours upon hours, every day, doing little but sitting and watching YouTube videos.
I advocate thoroughly searching YouTube for good videos that are on topic and put them on your site. If you can't find one that fits, make one.
Thank you for the very informative article. I am going to experiment by using the recommended layout for flagship hubs on my own websites and see if it results in higher rankings.
Mark, I have just signed up to Hubpages, I'm blown away by your article/guide. I am making a copy to hang on my wall.
Thanks!
Great hub, thumbs up! SY
More quality information. Thank you for writing something worth reading.
Thanks for the useful information for newbie like me. You are a motivator to all hubbers here. hehhehe..Thanks once again for remind me. Cheers from Malaysia
Yipeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!
Thanks for this Mark, Only have a blog at the moment but want to look at devolping my own web site in the future and it is nice to see somebody being so honest.
Today the weather in this little English Devon Village is wet and windy and a bit chilly round the willy!
Thanks once again Mark!!!
Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!
This is a hub I'll make a hardcopy off. Thanks Mark.
I have the dumbest question ever. In your title you say How I got my hub to be on Google's first page.
What do you mean by google's first page? Do you mean if they type in 'motorcyles' you are the first listing? Or is there some 'first page' of google I don't know about?
I agrees with you on this whole Internet bandwagon to be "googled". I am figuring out a much better approach myself. You are doing it.
I enjoy your hub immersely. I want to read more of your other hubs but it is so late in the night. I shall come back. Geez, I am so ashamed of my first hub posted recently after seeing your. My face is so red already. Smile.
Thank you.
I greatly appreciate the integrity of your approach. If only everyone posting on the internet would abide by your standards!
woow what a writing, pal, just great.very useful article indeed.
Thanks for the tips, trying to have my hub on google
wow 300,000 pages competition. I like your non-typical approach to this, that is using no SEO techniques. A normal hubpage seems to rank very highly in Google and you normally get a double listing. I guess you cant use this for selling stuff but if you want to get some ad revenue, it cant be badm bet you get good traffic!
Great stuff -There's too much rubbish out there. The sooner people realise that providing good content combined with simple basic SEO page design will give better results the better.
I am new to hubs and blogs. This guideline (hub) is awesome.
Thanks,
Paul
Thanks for the advice, it was a pleasure reading your article. I just hope now I can implement your advice into my Hub pages.
Thanks

This is very informative.
Thank you for that info!

I just wanted to tell you that as I suspected... you are right on!
Currently, I have two of my most recent articles on the first page of Google. One is actually in the number 1 position on the very first page of Google.
Very exciting!
Thanks again for the outstanding advice given here. I must say though... this type of Hub, is work! LOL
But a good feeling when publishing as you know you have put your all into what you put out there.

Thank you Mark. Clear concise and easy to follow. I just joined a few hours ago and answered my first request. Looking forward to the journey.
Thanks Mark,
It's fantastic that you took the time to outline this information for everyone. It is informative and extremely well versed. It has made a lot of things much clearer for me.

Dear Mark,
I'm new to HubPages but not so new to building websites. This hub is excellent advice for a beginner such as myself, and your motorbike hub is an inspiration (I'm a pushbike fan, but appreciate the depth of your knowledge and clarity of your site).
I wish you good luck in future ventures!

Mark - as a Realtor who blogs a lot this is excellent advice - I got some great new tips to incorporate so thanks for sharing in such a direct way - loved it - looking forward to hearing how you did making money too!
Mark - Thanks! I am brand new to this whole blogging thing and am finding it a bit overwhelming, especially all the site that want you to allow uncontrolled ads to be placed on your page. This was an excellent read, I too love to write and really am not looking to "get rich" with my muse. I'd just like to share my thoughts and have people exchange theirs on the subjects. I believe your correct...99% of internet info is garbage!
Terrific advice! I'm going to bookmark this one to use as a reference for my future HubPages publishing. If only there were a printable version.... ;)
Boiling it down: write good content. Excellent advice Mark. The search engines really are pretty good at figuring out what is quality content and ranking it appropriately. So all you have to do is write something interesting and unique. That really puts you on the path to search engine success.
Thank you very much. I just started writing online. It helps a lot
Thanks for the great information Mark. I really enjoy your approach of am I adding great content or just more trash? This hub is now a bookmark and I will use some if not all of the guidelines as I move forward in my creation of hugpages!
Yes! Thanks for spelling it out , Mark. The lightbulbs are flashing. I'm seeing stars!
No idea how I've not read this hub before now but I have today and its great, thank you
stubbs
This is great advice. Thank you!
You mentioned there are 200K results for "2008 motorcycle guide." What is the number of daily searches?
One point you may wish to add is that to get traffic, there have to be people searching.
=D
It loads for me no problem :)
Mark,
Thanks for the great content and the eithical way of promoting. I appreciate all the great tips here. I am new to Hubpages and the ins and outs of what I can and can't post is great.
As far as promoting stuff, I do love to recommend high quality products, authors, teachers and resources in lots of different areas. I don't want to get in a jackpot of pushing links or affiliating myself with others in a non-ethical manner ever, but I've been very fortunate to have found the 2% of internet marketing teaching that is not junk, having taken a year or so to sort out the rest!
Looking forward to learning and doing it the right way: to do what I love to do, write, share, learn, and promote the good stuff! I am so impressed with your interaction with each of your readers too!
Since I haven't started my first hub yet, this is a fantastic way to get it right, from the start! Thanks, Again, and thanks for all the comments.
Best, Mary
Thanks Mark i really enjoy your article. It's good to see if you follow the rules, they work. Why does everybody try to reinvent the wheel
cheers
Rowan
Mark,
Thanks for the great information. We've used this guide in publishing our first couple of hubs and it has helped us score very well. In fact, we're including some of your ideas in our regular websites as well.
Thanks again.

Hi Mark - I'm brand new at this, and I really appreciate the clear, no-nonsense advice you're presenting here. I don't know if I'll ever get a hub on Google page one, but I'm sure that by following your advice I'll do a lot better than I would otherwise! Thanks again, - Deanna.
hello
Ouch, those are some hefty minimum requirements Mark, does that mean my own hub (just created my first one yesterday) or anyone else's who don't meet these minimums can't rank well?
As a rookie to Hub Pages I'm certainly grateful for your throwing this information out there for everyone to learn from and I hope to do better as I go along.
I noticed that this very hub you created to tell us of your HUB strategy doesn't seem to meet all the minimum requirements you mentioned such as the min. 3 video requirement and some others. Is there a reason you held back on this particular Hub page?
Thanks again,
Stephen
Hi Mark,
I'm brand new here and found this article. It certainly makes sense. Can you point me to the spot where it says that we should have a minimum of 3 relevant video capsules?
Thank you.
I found the requirements here Greg http://hubpages.com/help/flagship_hubs_moreBy the way Mark I see they have a "Flagship Hubs Topic Pool" of topics to pick from here http://hubpages.com/help/flagship_hubs_pool but I'm wondering if we "have to" pick from this pool of topics for any given month to write about or do the administrators allow us to suggest one we would like to write about? Thanks,Stephen
Sorry Greg my links to the flagship hub criteria got screwed up for some reason, let me try one more time. If it happens again the first link ends with the word "more" and the second with the word "pool" so you can just copy and paste if need be.-Stephenhttp://hubpages.com/help/flagship_hubs_morehttp://
Interesting Mark so you're saying that perhaps a rookie Hubber like myself may not be given as much leeway in selecting my own flagship hub till I "earn my stripes" so to speak like yourself. Is that your theory?
Stephen & Mark,
Thank you both!
"Why don't you email them and ask? "WHAT, why should I be the one to ask? Isn't that what I pay you all this money for Mark!? Oh, wait, .......... that's right, I don't pay you anything. :-) Ok I guess I'l ask. LOLThanks for your input Mark, much appreciated, and I like the pic of the BBQ ribs in your link above. Makes my mouth water.-Stephen
Great article!
Great article
hi allow me to do a little bit analysis (& of course may others too find it helpful)
1) everyone is selling something, but we should have moral principles not to fool someone into making us a sale. (i don't think so there is any harm in honest selling, afterall you too have adsense, so honesty is best policy).
2) link to authority websites: i think by linking to hubpages rules, you have generated confidence in everyone.
3) i found it weird that you don't have bio pages, contact you link, & all other stuffs found on right side.
THIS IS INTELLIGENT, there's this "related hubs" things, now this won't distract people. Really intelligent. will follow.
4) Writing style: i don't know it helps people or not, but i've natural analytic mindset (i've done it here again), but your writing style is certainly such which everyone would identify with. i'll certainly improve here. your PRO.
5) so far as i know about SEO'S i would agree with you only in few points.
HELP PLEASE
iam not that used hubpages, i saw your profile on right side. i tried my hands on my hubs, but simply couldn't make it look like yours. how you make it this way. please guide.
& for that SEO, google guidelines for webmasters say that one must do just a little bit of key word search or otherwise people won't be able to find it. certainly we must do, do not stuffing.
Excellent! And also very easy to see how you're getting and keeping your own personal score here at Hubpages :)Now to find the time to get a flagship done! They give 7 days I believe (?) to get one completely done (or was I misinformed). How many hours would you estimate you put in to create the motorcyle hub? Just curious :)
Interesting hub Mark although I know how to get a hub or most other kind of site number one on google it is great you have done it, the main key is competition.
I see that you are still are on the first page with your hub "2008 Motorcycle Guide".So quality work is always appreciated.Keep it up Mark .
I would love to write something that could be of real value to people. You have inspired me to try to come up with something amazing in the near future.
Hey Mark
I really admire a person who tells it like it is, your honesty is really very refreshing and yes you are right "the Internet IS full of Garbage", although today it seems to be a whole lot cleaner than say a couple of years ago thanks to algorythm changes from all the top three search engines. Congratulations on your hubs I'm very impressed.
Steve
This is amazing content Mark. You certainly subscribe to the prosperity mindset.
Thanks for the great info.
this is really a great hub.very informative. thanks.
I like your idea vey much. Now I wish to put it before more people so they get some additional bright ideas to make a dent on Googles.
Thanks
I just started hubbing, so I might sound naive with my questions. On the motorcycle guide, is the RSS feed that list of motorcycles on ebay? How does one find the code for that sort of thing? It's a good way to keep an article current.
Also, I wonder how we can find out which search words will bring in traffic. I have a movie review blog, and if I google "thoughtless movie" I come out number one--yay! But who would ever think to look up "thoughtless" anything?
Overall, thanks for the article, some well-thought tips.
You have really spoken the truth. I also got one of my hubs on google rankings but I dont know why I still dont see enough traffic on this hub.May people dont search it a lot.
Dear Mark
Thank you for a great information. I love writing on hubpages and it is great to see how you put it all together and it is step by step plan that each of us can implement!
Have a nice day!
Tatyana
Thanks Mark. Great info. I am going to write a decent content only. Not a garbage!
Excellent Hub Mark, Thank you for sharing. Lol, I thought I would never quit scrolling to be able to leave my comment, obviously my sentiments are shared by everyone else here. Great job.
Incredibly informative. Thank you!
Great Information and very easy to understand.
Holy smoley you are very quickly becoming my favorite mentor, and i really have a lot to learn as I was not aware of most of this.
I have the honesty to do this and willingness to help others...now if only i can apply the other 98% of your advice I'll be doing good! Definitely bookmarking this one.
You are definitely in the Know Mr Knowles.
Thanks for the tips. Fantastic hub:)
Mark - you nailed it as usual - hard to argue with that common sense recipe for success (since I know you're good at recipes too :D)
Mark - it is nice to see someone talk about quality and a system in terms of how to rank high in Google results.
I do have a question for you: for your 2008 motorcylce guide, did you do anything in terms of marketing the hub, or did it just get the rankings on its' own accord?
Content is king, keywords are queen, and Mark is obviously the crown prince!
Keep up the good work!
Thanks
I have been meaning to check into the Google Hub; now is the best time - so here I go
This is very believable just like I said in my earlier comments on other Hubs. I have found more than a couple of what I have been searching on for years here at HubPages. The posts here make more sense than the searches I have made. Most of the elements and basics were clearly defined here. No need to use traffic sites which I am still using now. It's true, the topic, reliable keywords and links, including most relevant photos and videos will get the readership and traffic. I wish I could achieve something like this!
I shall be applying your advice to future Hubs, and also to the next rewrite of our own website. Most articles that begin 'how to' end up with a sales pitch - how lovely to find that yours just contained advice.
This is excellent Mark! I followed your advice word for word when creating my first Hub - thanks! This is a 'must read' for anyone new to Hub Pages!!
Great hub Mark... you got yourself a fan. What google looks for is diverse content like you mentioned.. not just text. Add pictures, videos, polls and visitors will come. That's why hubpages and squidoo do so well.. because they make adding pics, videos, polls so easy!
Great advice on how to build a better hub page, I believe it can be applied to many type of web pages.
Thanks for this great inspiring hub.
Thats a fantastic stuff i really enjoyed it, when go thro those hubbers i regret of not joining this community early.
Well DONE!
I think you made it very clear that getting on the first page of google can be as simple as having something relevant to say!
I appreciate this hub very much, excellant job outlining the steps and telling us about your experience.
Great hub, thanks. I hadn't heard about the Flagship Hub instructions until I read this. Hubpages having spelled out exactly what they want, it makes sense to keep those instructions in mind with every hub you create, because as you said, obviously that's what works or they wouldn't have put the rules together in the first place.
Excellent advice, I'll have to give this a try!
Excellent hub. You take the time to go into depth about how the system works and how we can all benefit from it. However, we need to be thought provoking and up to date on matters. Fluff is not the way to go and so many hubbers do just that. I myself prefer to read good content which is what you put out.
Thank again!
Very, very rich and highly useful.
Thank you very much!
Thanks for the great advice here. A nice, straight forward, nosense explanation on how to do things properly. I'm going to be applying some of this stuff to my existing hubs to try and make them even better.
Thanks!
Great checklist points when I do my first hub. And have an achievable target to be on google's first page by following your advice.
Thanks Mark.
Thanks Mark,
Your posting was insightful for a newbie like me and I hope I too post similar Hub like yours :)
Hi Mark, I found this hub via a link from another site;) Yes, it's true, an in-depth, quality piece will do well. Thanks for spreading the word.
Thanks for the info Mark.
When are you going to get ready for 2009 - the earlier the better!
I bet no one will have optimised for it before September at the earliest!
Kolin
Hey Mark, I would say based on the number of comments that this is a popular hub! Seems like more than a few people are interested in getting on Google's first page. I think your summary of what it takes is dead on, though you might start the hub with a disclaimer "If you aren't willing to work hard, don't bother reading this." I've bookmarked this hub to come back to and read again. I had to stop half way through the comments as there is only so much I can digest at a time. By the way, I checked your google rankings (just to make sure it wasn't a fluke or a temporary thing, and you're still there - though it looks like you dropped from 3 to 4 :), but you've still got two spots. Incredible! I feel the power of the hub!
An excellent hub! Well written, looks great, and more importantly, I enjoyed reading it! You're quite right, the internet is just filled with too much advertising and junk information. I think you're right that people should be doing what they can to reduce the amount of trash on the internet.
Once again, superb job on this article!
Thanks a lot Mark... I now have to re-think the way I've been writing articles for years ;-)
I've been writing "Good" articles, and going to massive efforts to get links pointing at them so they rank. It's quite inspiring to see that if you write a great article, google rewards you automatically!
Great stuff!
PS - Do you have a favorite source for non-copyrighted images?
Great hub.
Why is the right way to do things such hard work? :)
I'm going to try to apply this as soon as possible
Very nice hub Mark. I have been wanting to write a flagship hub. Way to go and congrates on your number one. I read this in hopes on learning from the best and I was not let down. Great Job.
Mark, you said
"I genuinely believe there is no need for keyword stuffing, long tail keyword phrase research or any other efforts that people use to cheat the system and get their garbage to the top of the results pile."
I disagree about the keyword phrase research aspect, and believe that this should be a part of hub and article planning.
Granted, some might use this to cheat the system. But it can also be used for good purposes.
Just like a knife can be used to kill someone - or to save a life.
Here's a couple of things you may want to consider in relation to your motorcycling hub.
Your keyword phrase "2008 Motorcycle guide" would appear to get less than 30 searches per month in Google, and adwords cost is 5 cents.
The keyphrases "motorcycle buyers guide" and "motorcycle buying guide" each receive over 600 google searches per month, and the adwords cost (and therefore Adsense payouts) are around 10 times higher.
You could consider trying a hub that uses these terms, and comparing the results.
I don't intend to get bogged down in this too much, but I believe that you could significantly improve your adsense income by paying some attention to keyword phrases, and tailoring the hub titles, names, and content to keyphrases that provide the best results.
Sometimes the results are very subtle. Here are the number of monthly google searches for three similar terms:
business web site - 58,710
business website - 49,260
business websites - 13,920
(Note - these are competitive terms, and it would be very hard to get to the top of google for any of them - but the same principles apply to any search term)
It's not cheating the system to find out the terms for which people are searching, eveluating the amount of competition, and then providing quality hubs or articles to match them.
And by the way - to find an accurate figure of competing sites for a search term, put the search term in quotes. To use your example:
2008 motorcycle guide - a search without the quotes returns about 250,000 pages. This means the number of sites that have the words 2008, motorcycle, and guide somewhere on a page.
It is NOT the number of sites where those 3 words appear together in that order. To find this, you need to search for "2008 motorcycle guide" - in quotes. This search tells you that there are 391 pages where that exact phrase appears. And this is the number of sites you are competing against.
Cheers,
Eric G.
You're welcome.
Yes, there's heaps of ways to skin a cat, and even more ways to approach setting up a web page.
I'm sure that you get many hits for quite a few related terms. I just wanted to make the point that keyword research ain't necessarily devils work. Didn't really mean to write a book :-)
Great hub anyway.
Cheers, Eric G.
Mark, I agree that it's unfortunate that individuals and organizations interested in search engine optimamization are more than those who actually want to add value to the Internet.
Because I'm not very interested in SEO, I was surprised to see my hub about fresh fried bread as the first result on the first page in Google (fresh fried bread). The hub doesn't have any links, videos, and has about 650 words. But it has a number of images created by me, and it took time to write and edit.
Great hub!
Regards
wow, that was some great advise you there. The only thing i dont get is why this page only has a current rating of 94 and not 100?
thanks a million
Good hub. I noticed that Mark Knowles regularly respond to almost each an every comment made by his readers. Maybe this is what many of us are missing.
I always had trouble getting to the first page with my hubs, still have never made it past 3. These tips are really helpful, much better than buying some e-book.
Dear know,
I read your hub completely and started reading comments. True to myself I do not have patiense to read the long tail.
i have started writing one month back and have got good traffic, Some of my pages I found in the 1st or 2nd pages in google search auttomatically. The only thing I did , write original and spontaneous using my own knowledge. Though I did not know exactly how to add links and I did not put any videos so far. I do not have much photographs and do not know how to find it.
I searched you tube yesterday for the first time for gem and jewelery but found all the videos commercial. Can I add those? Will it not violate adsense rules?
Most of the links are also commercial, can I add those?
I am a non English speaking so my English is not very good. can I write a flagship hub?
I will be greatful if you answer my questions.
Thanks for great tips and a very useful hub.
Thanks, thanks, thanks.
Jyoti Kothari
Thanks. Your Hub was helpful.
Excellent hub - well-written and highly informative. Thanks!
In Mark's defense, Eric Graudins wrote that keyword research helps to find the "high volume" search phrases, but he failed to point out that just because it's higher volume, that doesn't mean it's better, and that's for several reasons:
1) Sure, Mark could have written an article optimized for "motorcycle buying guide", but that is probably 100 times more competitive, and a #1 spot on google (nearly instantly) for a long-tail phrase probably gets more traffic than a #25 or #30 spot for a highly competitive phrase. It might take a lot longer to make it to the first page (let alone #1) and until he gets there, it won't get him much exposure at all.
2) Just because it gets more traffic, that doesn't mean it's best to rank for that phrase. For example: "Colorado" gets about 1000 times as much traffic as "Colorado real estate". If I sell Colorado homes, that doesn't mean I should try to optimize for that phrase, because only about 3% of that traffic is looking for what I sell. Even though 3% of the traffic of "Colorado" phrase would be FANTASTIC, it would take PHENOMENAL effort to make it to the first page. Even though it's less traffic, it's TARGETED traffic. I'd be better off getting to the first page with a tiny fraction of the effort for "Colorado real estate", "Boulder real estate" , "Boulder CO real estate", and any other cities I serve.
The same goes for Mark's case. If he were in motorcycle sales, and sold every type of motorcycle under the sun, maybe it would be worth fighting his way to the top for the more competitive phrase. However, if he just sells new motorcycles, 90% of his traffic wouldn't be worth his while. Instead, he'd just laugh his way to the bank selling 2008 motorcycles, while everyone else is fighting over the other traffic. Then, on January 1, 2009, he could wash, rinse & repeat, and get all that traffic everyone else is ignoring -- probably as early as January 2nd ;-)
I said it earlier Mark, and I'll say it again -- Thumbs up! I'm a fan.
When you put it like that, it seems so straight forward and simple.
Thanks for the great hub!
May seem a bit superfluous 15 inches down the line, but thanks again! It is really refreshing to find these honest, rational tips that even google's top won't provide. I'm considerably new to this thing, so it's great reading your hub early on! Thanks for your help again :D Now to find the props/favorites button whatever the form it takes...
@ Joel:
You're right about high volume not being necessarily better. I was just addressing Mark's apparent disdain for any kind of keyword research.
And yes, when you take into account the competion for a phrase, (ie exact matches, allinurl, allinanchor, allintitle) you would be far better off going for a phrase with one quarter of the number of searches, and one percent of the competition.
But you have to take a softly, softly approach with Mr. Knowles or he's likely to bite :-). Or send his army of people after you.
And Mark - I'd be interested to know how the keyword results go over time.
Well that's hardly optimizing the page for those terms.
If you want to do an experiment, send me the topic of a future hub and I'll do a bit of keyword stuff for you. You can then optimise for these, and see how it goes.
Can't you bloody well read: I said a FUTURE hub, not one of your current ones.
BTW - Do you ride a motorcycle now? If so let me know.
If you grovel hard enough, I'll send you an invention of mine that will make riding much more pleasurable. As a hint, it protects the second most sensitive six inches of your body :)
Great tips. thank you!
this is an extremely helpful article.
Sorry to pull up an old Hub Mark, but I am new to HB and am reading this for the first time. You did a great job explaining the process. SEO is about finding formulas that work. I do well in Squidoo because I have found a basic formula that works for me. Not that all of my lenses are the same, but I use certain capsules that are my style. You seem to have a figured out a good formula here. Thank you very much for sharing that with the HB community. It now looks like I have some updating to do :)
"keyword phrase research or any other efforts that people use to cheat the system and get their garbage to the top of the results pile."
You know where I find the absolute MOST garbage? In the Paid for / pay-per-click results. It drives me BONKERS! Sometimes there are SO many of them, you actually have to go on to page TWO of results just to get to the WEB results (and the line/text to where it begins is in really tiny print! - I really detest this about Google - seems every single day they are out to just make more $$ (like they need it) and produce less and less true useful content based results on the search term.
I am beginning to not like google at all and I use many other SE now - like ask.com - finding SE that DO NOT use google results is not so easy anymore though either!!
Thanks for the article - I am suprised at all that is required to be considered a *greatly written hub* - seems quite over blown to me - too many videos - too many pictures. A LOT of text when most of the time 1500 words would just be *filler*.
Thanks again - Melanie
Fantastic Mark. you have given the information which is available but unnoticed. This will help all the hubbers to think for a while, before they begin to hub. You made the visitors to stay for long because they have to read and digest the article. You have excellent marketing skills. I feel this will motivate many hubbers to rethink and we will see a change in the hubtivity.
you did a good job. Good luck.
Great hub Mark. I haven't read anything as good as this in most paid eBooks.
The Marketing Mentor
...so much wisdom...thank you
Is there any way to earn money with a Cartoon or is how-to writing better? It's on sweetieandbirdbrain.com if anyone can take a look. Thanks for the great information.
P.S. My Grandfathers name was Knowles Irish I think, and my sons name is Mark!
Wow, it's all in the details, that's for sure :) Thanks for sharing your hints and tips!
Looks to me like everyone on hubpages has been here so I guess I'll say hi too.
Just seeing all the comments speaks to the quality.
This hub has excellent information. The summary of hub explains only one thing, good content = good rank.
You just talked about basic seo principles that can be applied to anything. Hub Pages, Facebook Profiles, Twitter Profile, Squidoo Lenses, etc.
These are things that everyone should be doing to their websites or content sharing pages.
Hi Mark,
You are certainly a famous face around these parts -- I see you often on discussion threads, as well as often in other people's fan lists -- maybe your distinguished older gentleman photo also helps out your popularity at Hubpages :-).
I, too, have been on Page One on Google for a number of keyword combinations with this hub:
http://hubpages.com/hub/Google-Adsense-Strategies-
and I have been at Number One on Google for ages with this one:
http://hubpages.com/hub/Auto-Insurance-and-Sexism-
What interests me most, however, is that I don't actually get many visitors from Google for either of these hubs!
Just goes to show that, if you want traffic, then it can be a risky business putting all your eggs in one Google basket.
Thanks for the great, informative hub, here -- I will definitely be marking it down to come back for future reference.
Wow this was helpful. Will probably be helpful again in like four days, and again in a couple of weeks and ...
Great hub! I signed up for hubpages about 2 months ago, but never came back till yesterday to write anything. I was intending to read a few hubs, all the rules and FAQ's hubpages has, maybe take a week or two to do all this research and then write more hubs. After reading this and your other hub "Using hubpages as an online resume or CV", I feel like im ready to jump into writing more hubs. Thanx a ton for the wealth of information.
Great hub Mark, I just found it in forums (you were giving the link to googlecashmoney).
I've definitely found my flagship hubs to be my most popular... at first I thought the topics were random, but then I realized the idea behind them. Wonderful hub
I only make about $2.00 a month here so what choice do I have but to listen to you? I am definitely learning more from you here than from people arguing in the forums.
Flagship hubs sounded hard before you explained them. Thanks for everything Mark.
I know the answer is 42 but what was the question again?
This is good stuff! But you have to admit you are at the top of google on a keyword that, according to keyword research isn't even searched for, now on Hubpages you are a hit with this page. Not to be hating on you because I want to try this out, but do you have a good amount of traffic coming from Goggle, for this page? Thanks for this Hub!
Hi Mark, you wrote:
Just take a look at the information provided in your google analytics account. They tell you practically the name, address, age and sexual preferences of every visitor to your site; how they found you, how long they stayed and where they went afterwards – Truly Scary.
-- Where do you find those statistics on GoogleAdSense? When I tried finding it, no such luck. There is a Site Diagnostics option but it did not seem to show anything.
Thank you!

Thank you for such quality advice. I think that the compliments paid to you above say it all so I will not add any duplicates. Well Done
That's good solid advice - no gimmicks, no short cuts, and although I'm not into motorbikes I could tell you've gone into great detail in your hub - well done on the first place.
Just read this for the first time. Excellent!
Advise are fully very usefull. Thank you........
In many ways, it makes sense. I just did one, more or less, following those rules called "Teaching 101." Everything you ever wanted to know about becoming a teacher, but I included the requisite videos, pics, news feed, etc.
For comparison:
http://hubpages.com/hub/Teaching-101
Oh Truly, you are a man after mein herz. You got me with 99% of the internet is garbage. I also think Hubpages may kick in a bit with a flagship hub. This is totally total. I need more videos in my hubz I guess.
nice info, thanks for this hub
Wow. I just started making my first hub page and somehow stumbled into yours. This is terrific and useful and well written. I am still working on mine but come by in a few days to see how well it fits your outline/ or hubs outline. I never imagined a hub page could do that well at google.
tweet tweet.
Question: How do you KNOW that the following is true?
how to write a flagship hub
I really want to know HOW you know this.
Wow! Thanks for all this information. I feel so overwhelmed by this process, and it's nice to hear that there's actually a logical explanation for it all. Maybe over time I can pull all these techniques together the way you have.
This is a simply great hub thanks to share your open secrets with hub community.
Thank you Mark. We recently joined HubPages and have been blown away by the credibility, integrity, and transparency of the way the community is set up, and the activity and exciement level of the members. Your tips and advice were exactly what we were looking for to ensure that our hubs can maximize exposure...and do so organically and naturally. We look forward to reading more of your hubs in the future, for sure.
Good hub mark thanks
I knew this hub already, just commenting now. Well written Mark. May the Google Gods show mercy on you consistently lol.
great hub. pointers I will definetly impliment. thank you
Very good hub! I think that most of us want to be at the top of Google. I know that I would like to be.
Your instructions are clear and easy to follow and I appreciate that you took the time to lay it all out. I can tell that you have been writing for a long time and are a very good writer at that!
I will be printing this out and following the instructions.
Thanks again!
Nice job getting top ranking in Google but even better job engaging your audience. Not only are you not gaming Google you are not gaming HubPages either. Kudos!
Thanks for this excellent hub, it is a breath of fresh air! With all the pop ups and junk on the internet, I was getting more and more depressed and confused as to how to make some online money. I tired to do surverys, but they are so mind numbing, I could not take it, the same goes for online sweepstakes, it is just ridiculous! I would much rather write quality hubs, get them on googles first page and then see what happens. I am going to read your other hubs, finally I got some straight answers that I can understand. I completely overlooked the flagship page! It is the nature of the internet itself, it is hard to settle on just one website, there are always more to explore, however, the Hubpages has given me more information that I can really use, and it is FREE! Thank you so much again!
Very nice article. Well written and full of useful ideas. I have read several of your works and I really like them. You are indeed a guru for me when it comes to giving details and how you do your craft. Thanks a lot for sharing it.
Brilliant advice,I can totally see how you acheived your goal. Thanx for the guidelines:)
Thanks for the truly informative hub Mark. Its great to have someone just break it down simply for all us newbies that aspire to someday have a "hot" hub. I will keep this hub in mind when I write for my future hubs.
Thanks for the info...
But all that is really necessary? I mean I posted an hub just 3 days ago and its already on the first page of ggogle.
Its http://hubpages.com/hub/Anime-Online---Watch-Golde
just try search for watch golden boy OR golden boy online and you'll see what I mean.
Now, after that I made a simmilar one concerning Serial Experiments Lain another anime I like. It's http://hubpages.com/hub/Anime-online---Watch-Seria
and it's nowhere near the fisrt page.
I must give it time to mature, but I think the main reason is that for Golden Boy there was not a lot of things written online, because its not such a well known anime, while Lain, well... it's Lain!
So I think one of your major key points is finding a niche and writing about something unnusual, but interesting to some people. You'll get to google first page then :D
still am there :D 6th position :D
coincidentally my Serial Experiment is nº1 on google when you put Lain Online.
It matured I guess ^_^'
But you're right I still need to learn a lot about all this things. I'm just a nurse anyway :D
I tried doing a hub with similar instructions like you describe here... photos, videos and I really put some research into it... But the other ones i did before are getting better... Since its about the history of anime, maybe its a broader scope and it doesnt work like that, i dont know :(
I tried promoting it in some sites, but lets just say my social network is low o_o
I reaaly think its a good hub though. http://hubpages.com/hub/The-Anime-Phenom---Why-do-
Score: 97 Fans:763 Hubs:146
Of course you have :D You write damn good hubs as well! Good luck on your enterprises and thanks for the advices!
Hello
I apologize for my comment may sound a bit harsh i m not trying to be rude here just for the sake of argument,
I do not see how this information can be of any use since the keyword you chose seems to be very weak on wordtracker free keywords, also resembles that of your Hub title which being unique bounds to rank number one for that specific keyword,
however i may be wrong,
please would you be willing to share how many visitors you get from this?
Thanks so much for this excellent information. I can't wait to get back to my blog! It seems that I have a bit of work to do!
Thanks so much for a wonderful hub! That was informative, to the point and makes so much sense!
Thanks for the information. I do belive that if you are a writer and naturally do the things you outlined your blogs, hubs, or web pages will naturally rise to the top. I have seen this with my blog. I am actively marketing myself with word of mouth advertising and am seeing a steady amount of new good quality traffic to my blog and have seen my page rankings rise to the top. Thanks again for the remidners and a few more things I did not know or try.
Wow! these are really great info on how to rank my hub #1 on Google..^^ I will try to copy what you did..maybe it might work for me as well..^^
This is amazing and i can see the results on your page on top of my google bar, a healthy green rank. Thank you so much for sharing your ideas behind a success.
Wow,you really did your homework. i hope I can get to this point on hupages.thanks for the information
Thank you so much for this info. I am just starting out and this is the exact type of info I need all on one page and for free. Again, thank you!
Thanks Mark for the great information! I just joined Hubpages and looked over their initial how to manual but I didn't even know that they even provided flagship instructions! Thanks for a great hub, now I can make sure I build good stuff instead of more internet garbage.
Hi Mark! Thks for this great information. I do like the idea that include at least 3 videos from YouTube or Google. This really helps visitors to stay longer at our page.
I would say Google will really love our page and it may view the page as "very informative" if we are able to apply every points that you mentioned here. Pages being positioned in the first page of SERP would be good enough.
It seems that many works needed to be done but it is really a worthwhile effort at the end for a **Thumb Up** page!
Hi Mark,
What a great article. I've read it a couple of times and even bookmarked it. Many thanks for sharing this with us.
kind regards,
Brian
Hi Mark ,
I've only been a Hubber for about a week and I'm sure glad I found this Hub early in the piece. There is too much info to take in in one reading, so I'm becoming a Fan and coming back to reread and reread.
Thanks for the great info.
WOW, I am glad that I read this info. I am two months old, working 4 days a week and do not spend much time on the Internet... So I thought having 3-4 well -written original pieces will be better than writing hubs just for the sake of it. Reading your hub has just confirmed that.... Thank you very much indeed!
Spot on advise. As I've researched SEO, I've come to the exact same conclusion. The only real and lasting SEO is quality content. This hub spells it out in it's simplest terms. Thank you! Bill
Thank you for this hub. I have only been hubbing for 2 weeks at the time of writing this.
I have a hubscore that is ok for most of my hubs and so I am excited about the prospect of trying to built an "optimized" one.
I will read all of this again until I understand it, then impliment your advice.
This hub has saved me a lot of time, as I would usually have to visit a lot of places to get dubious advice.
I feel a lot safer here as the number of comments is strongly indicative of the quality advice you have generously provided.
Thank you so much.
Great set of techniques. I'm going to start applying some of your suggestions to the next hub I write.
Mark
Great hub! You are amazing writer.. Awesome information. I am passionate about hubpages and I love using them as my marketing tool. Thank you again.
Tatyana Gann
Mark,
Great read. This Hub is full of powerful information that well help any hubber.
Brett SheliteThe HBB Advisor
Great tips that I will be applying to my next hub which is in the making. Thanks, Michelle Moseley
Excellent tips, appreciate all of them, been in this automated maketing now for over 18 months, and its a continuos learning curve. Just found a site that will analize any of your headlines and give you a score from 0 to 100, on the emotional impact of your headline. Powerful.
Warm regards
RayLanfear
Thanks for the info! This is really helpful for newbies like me. :-)
Thanks for the informative hub, Mark. I've been trying to be a good little hubber, but there's obviously a learning curve. This hub will help me sort things out -- and I love your no-nonsense style.
Mark,
This is absolutely valuable information and thank you so much for sharing as I have been trying to figure this out for sometime. I am going to use this as a tool as this is exactly what I have been looking for.
This is a great hub -- thanks for all of the useful information!
Fabulous hub! I like it even more that the first comment was dated 9 months old and you're still on position 1 for that keyword when I just googled for it. What an inspiration!
Thanks Mark for the valuable info. I wonder if making appropriate alterations to existing hubs will make these hubs start improving in page rakings?
I am glad I found this hub. I sure can use this information to help me achieve my goals.
I am curious about "quicksand" comment on here.....'making appropriate alterations to existing hubs......" I will be eager to read your response to his comment/question.
Thanks again for helping me gain better knowledge on how to achieve success with my own site.
Tanya See
Thanks Mark. I was under the impression that google keeps the "first impression" on record and does not bother too much about changes which take place afterwards :)
Mark, I am still confused by one issue ... You had suggested to include at least 10 relevant, helpful links to other sources, well that would take viewers away from the main hub, would it not? Instead of keeping them for long at the required location, especially with no provision in the "links" capsule to enable such pages to open in a new window.
Wonderful info I am going to do it!! Thanks
Thanks much for the insights. One of the key items that stuck out was a topic that seems to come up time and time again and that's the matter of keywords [ie. keyword stuffing and long-tail keywords] and other not so optimal marketing techniques. It is very easy to get caught up in all the hype of these methodologies but more often than not they are overhyped, time-consuming and Google of course will inevitably identify methods intended to override the algorithms. People like Perry Marshall and yourself included help to remind us that the tried and true methods are usually the best.
You're fright, when I wrote about pagerank, my blog number five in serp for key word high pagerank, but it is just for temporary two weeks, so the key factor beside pagerank is keyword, high traffic keyword or low traffic keyword ... and high competition keyword or low competition keyword
2008 motorcycle guide1 - 3$0.05 Not enough data 210
these are stats from google keyword tool, i hate to break the illusion party here but i dont see how this keyword can give you any traffic if it has 210 monthly visitors on google. :)
Good Evening Mark,
As a relative newcomer to Hub Pages, I appreciate all of the insight articles like yours provide.
Thanks for the effort and sharing,
Jim Hickey
Very good information here, thank you!
petiplogled - Well, how do you explain the 2,000+ visitors a month?
Matt you talked about this keyword , i guess sub keywords dont have much since this one has 20 impressions.
And for other keywords i dont think you rank high.
You ll probably delete my posts.
But sorry, i dont buy it that you got 2000 visitors.
I think you are cheating people here.
Howdee Mark, I've been given minimal instruction on how to maximize hugpages and now ... I get to read your article. This will bring all the pieces I've been puzzling over ... together. What a relief. You've provided the 'full circle' look and I am grateful.
Thanks so much.
Honey Jaks
Thanks a lot for sharing this useful info with us. Enjoyed reading this hub a lot.
Can you tell me the secret of putting images next to the text?
Hey Mark, I am "this guy" thakns for linking to our video on SEO, I have started uploading a bunch of new stuff too. Again, thanks for sharing the tip from our youtube channel (http://www.youtube.com/wilreynolds).

Nice hub Mark and some good solid advice. I just recently managed to get a google first page top 3 listing for a key word pharse in 24 hours. I was totally shocked. It was kinda of a test hub to feel things out and actually got banned at first but I made some adjustments and its fine now. Thanks for all the good tips.
I really want to thank you for delivering such quality information. I'm new to hubbing (not even a day old) and there's so much to learn. You've given me inspiration to take my passion for writing and sharing my thoughts to a whole new level. I hope I can stop by from time to time for more of your insight and feedback. I do believe in learning from the best.
Love & Light
Hey Mark,
Brilliant! You cut right through the BS and get to the point. POints! I don't think I've read a more useful treatment of SEO anywhere! I'm looking forward to reading more of your hubs. I love it when I learn things that are obvious, but only after I've learned them. Good on you. ANd thanks!
Bruce
Quality suggestions,Mark! I just created my first hub and used this hub as a reference. Thanks!
This seems like really good advice. I'll have to try it with a hub soon and maybe I'll earn more than like 60 cents a day lol.
Mark I just wrote a hub about the the Official Google guide to SEO - guess what they talk about quality content and good spelling - who would have thought - you were ahead of the game on this hub LOL
Thanks - it's good to hear how to help good quality content float to the top of all that crap out there.
Truly no nonsense article. to the point. this might come as a shock to many those who promote those forex affiliations or things like that. you said it rightly, that making money in forex trade is not as easy as these guys claim it to be. i was also an interbank forex dealer for sometime and i know the market well.
i enjoyed reading this.
wonderful hub, and true
Truly interesting. Thanks for sharing the great information.
Wow... thanks so much for sharing this information. I had no idea about videos and image copyrights. This changes everything. Thanks for all your hard work.
Excellent........thanks for your info
Mark this is sagely hub wisdom that I will take to heart. Thanks!
yowza. this may be the best hub ive ever read. top notch stuff. i believe i will have to fan you now
This sure is going to be my favorite hubpage ever.. really well written hub and thanks for the input.. im a novice so this is really informative
Very nice article. This page was written to a very good standard and contains a lot of useful information. Thanks very much!
good hub
Mark- Very useful information and will try to incorporate these guidelines from my next hub onwards or maybe start by modifying my existing hubs.
I learned a lot reading this hub. And it is written so anyone can understand it. Thank you so much.
Excellent information for the veterans out there and the rookies like myself who are trying to get the hang of this internet marketing thing. Thanx for the information and I will definitely apply your clearly written, informative steps. You now have one more fan. Thanx!
I got my first two hub pages listed on the front page of google too. what a hoot!
Good luck
Peace OUt
I'll keep all these hints in mind. Thank you so much. Debby
I am listed No. 1 on Google also. I know that because I just published a new site, and I used a three-word search term to see if the search engines are ranking my site yet.
The search term that I used is a prominent phrase on my site, and all three of the words are used all the time by other related sites. Two of the words are very very commonly used in the page titles or domain names of related sites.
Yes, Google shows that I am No. 1 on that term. No. Google is not sending much traffic to me.
The problem is that I only rank No. 1 if people search for those exact terms in the exact order and with the exact spelling. Any variation will kill my No. 1.
When I rank reasonably well for two-word search terms, then I will be getting business.
If I get to the point where I rank high on one-word search terms, then I will buy an island and relax.
By the way, using misspellings is a good way to rank high for misspelled search terms, but it will not help your ranking on correctly spelled words. This article has some good info about Domain Names and misspellings: Choosing a Domain Name for your Site or Blog
Fantastic hub - and so true too! Thanks for the reminders about what makes a good hub - I'm new here and just learning the ropes.
Do you have more techniques about SEO? I'm glad to find this information for free.
Thank's a lot.
I invited you to read my hubs, and tell me, what do you thing about my articles?
Wow. Hmmm now to duplicate it... wish I could do this on my hubs. I need more tiem and practice before the sun sets down on me. Thumbs up!!!
Mark,
Absolutely wonderful article! Since, I am a Newbie, I really appreciate the straight-forward no-nonsense advice. I, too did not know about FlagShip instructions. I will certainly be appying them from now on. I enjoyed, not only your informative content, but the humorous tone. I will be returning again and again. Thanks.
Cosmically,
Paula Andrea
This is excellent. I needed it! I want to publish the highest quality of useful information, but I keep hearing about shortcuts and survival in SEO, particularly with respect to the length of articles, long tail search terms, etc. It's overused, ineffective, and makes you unhappy if you pursue it. If you have worthwhile material to publish, do - if not, why bother. 99% is garbage, even if people are making money on it. I want to be in the other 1%!
Truly appreciated Mark! As a "brandnewbie", I have luckily stumbled into some excellent intellectual guidance with your article. While it's obvious I have MUCH to learn, I look forward to reading and re-reading your article and implementing your advice.
Thank You!!
you have made a great list of points. I have tested the youtube video hint you alluded to and noticed that when I added videos to sites I have previously worked with there was a noticeable spike in rankings (not necessarily traffic, but it does help). I feel that since Google's aquisition of youtube, they will give you a little boost for utilitzing their software on your postings.
Great list of points and I am ready to follow your guide...thanks for not dropping in a donate here or read on for one small fee...nice to finally discover a great article through Google again!!!
Great post, Mark! It really make sense. If Google and other search engine are doing a good job they should rank garbage lower and they should rank high well writen interesting and unique content. Thanks for sharing what you find so valuable wiht us.
hai,
im Nadim and new to hubpages
this means that if follow the hubpages way to generate our adsense and all we should be on our way to success ya?
thanx for the very adviseble article
Hi Mark,
I have actually read lots of materials on SEO and this Google stuff because of my desire to run a successful business online with good ranking but You did a very good work-simple, straightforward and sincere.
I will adjust accordingly.
Thanks Man, good work.
You have here very practical tip and useful information.
You explained it all very clearly.
Thanks
I will keep everyting in mind.
Great Hub, Mark. You have provided so much value. I am impressed and didn't charge anything for the information. This is what I call a unique and valuable contribution to helping the community of hubbers here on hubpages. You have contributed your value that enhanced everyone's need with the proper recognition of creating great solutions to marketing online. I have learned some valuable information, just by reading this hub. Pay Per Click, just as said google loves this which keeps the SEO a billion dollar industry. Enough could go around with the everyone wanting exposure through advertisement one's business.
Good hub, congratulations on your #1 placement ranking on google.
Very helpful article and a lot of good advice. I will be ure to put it to use when writing my next article
Hmm... As for that Garbage on the Net I just have a question:WHY do you think there Still IS so much 'garbage' on the Net...?Ever since I first logon Online in 1996 this was an issue. Today is 2009 and the 'garbage/spam' etc is STILL not only here, but it is Growing. How come? My Personal Answer: Because it Works! Because all the 'garbage' are products which people (and Mostly YOU = North Americans) ARE Buying!IF it wasn't profitable it wouldn't last past the year 2000! - yet it is still here.
So the Solution to the "99% Internet Garbage" is simple: STOP Buying Garbage!
Thanks for this. I am new to this game.
I do not know what some of the info. means, like the sentence below.
A news capsule (or highly-relevant RSS feed), or eBay Capsule if your topic is product-related
and
I thought we were only allowed two links going out?
At least 10 relevant, helpful links to other sources, each with your own 30-50 word description
I liked your info. and the video and your attitude
I guess I do not know what an RSS feed is yet. Thanks for the response about thelinks also.
What was you subject matter and how long did it take you to write the hub?
Thanks for the excellent ideas. There are several points you have brought up that I am going to work on in future hubs.
Thanks for the great imput and helping to clear up some of the confusion around Google page ratings and SEO...
Fantastic artcile, straight to the point, easy to read and full of top notch info without any fluff at all. Thank you veyr much.
great info its all about on our writing...
Yes , very thoughtful and a nice guide
Thanks Mark - this is just what I was looking for today. I'm really new to all of this and doing it primarily for enjoyment, but your advice is golden and will definitely help me over the long haul!
I must say that this article is the first realistic advice that I've read in a long time about getting a page to rank high in Google. Your advice is down to earth, common sense. Which is what I think a lot of the stuff I've read has lacked!
As a relative newcomer to HubPages, I have a lot to learn. I'm going to follow your advice -- more to help me create a good article about topics that I am interested in than in trying to rank high or to make money. I don't want to add garbage -- I want to add value to the lives of people who read what I write.
Thanks so much for your excellent advice!!
It's funny you're only publishing the positive comments to be displayed here. I want to see some pros and cons to your article!
Hey Mark - Don't waste your time worrying about Mr. Nonsense. It's a perfect pen name for him.
Just thought I would let you know that I just googled 2008 Motorcycle Guide and you are presently 1 and 2. Thanks for the tips. I'll have to try it.
Jim Henry, aka crashcromwell
LOL, just trying to get a rise out of you and your publishing Mr. Knowles -a-lot of nothing. Thank you for displaying your true mentality to all of your visitors.
Oh I read it, let me guess 99% of the internet is garbage and the other 1% is your hub page? You only have a pagerank of 2. Get a real website, develop some decent SEO for that, then get back to me. I'm bored of this.
Awesome Hub man. Your bullet points simply lay it all out. It's so refreshing to see someone give SEO advice without selling something. Take care on those motorcycles BTW!
Thanks for the tips. Now i know how to write an expert document that is kind of an authority. Already got rankings for my target keywords. Thanks a lot.
good to do the right right than do the thing right
This is a really awesome article. Great for beginners... like me.
Mark.
Earlier today I read your Hub, "How I Got My Hub To Be On Google's First Page". All I can Say is God Bless you buddy! In one article you answered questions I've been trying to find the answers to for months. I'm one of those lucky adults blessed with ADHD which means I get easily confused and overwhelmed. All of this IM stuff just seems more than I can comprehend at times. But your article was so well written it made perfect sense to me.
First of all I loved the way you started it. I am so sick of all the emails and webpages pitching the salvation of the Internet and all the gurus with the magic answers to getting rich overnight I just wanna throw up. My wife and I are all about helping other people. The only reason we want to get rich is so we can help others have a decent life.
I started out on Squidoo but never got any traffic. Maybe 10 hits in 6 months. I came here and have gotten lots of traffic even though I know my hubs need improvement. Now, after reading your motorcycle hub, I know what to do. This is what I did. First, using your MC hub I cut and pasted the content, pictures, videos and links into a document. This is going to be my hub template. Later I'm going back over my hubs and compare them to it and modify as needed.
That's what ADHDers need, templates, guides. I then went to your HP profile page and read up on you and when I saw you were a major blogger, I copied the links to all your blogs and pasted them in the same document. My wife, Diane and I are getting ready to get back into blogging. I published a hub a couple of days ago called "Climb Every Mountain - A Tribute To Large Breasted Women". The next morning I had 10 comments on it. I told Diane and she said "We gotta do a blog". I researched blogs about big breasts and 99% of them were porno sites as you can imagine. So I think we're onto something. I'm going to check out your blogs and try and get some tips. Hope you don't mind.
I have about 12 Hub Pages up now, mostly music related. I'm a singer/songwriter and musician. I spent 12 years in Nashville and got the opportunity to do it in the big time for awhie. I'm very proud of that and now I'm trying to help others by sharing my experiences, especially those who have dreams of doing the Nashville thing. I put up a hub called "Songwriting - Nashville Style" That I think is going to do well. I also have a guitar lesson series called "Guitar Lessons That Don't Suck" and a few other things. I write under 3 different usernames, Joe Russ, nvsongwriter and obxscribe. The obx stands for Outer Banks (NC) where we live presently.
Thank you again for your wonderful articles. They are very helpful.
Joe Russ
joeruss56@gmail.com
very helpful information
Thank you for the food for thought!
thats what people call out of box thinking
keep it up
WOW! Unbelievably wonderful, helpful post. No hyperbole intended. I'm new to HubPages, and I found your Hub to be precisely as you packaged it. :-D
It's straight, to the point, and no hype. Precisely the way I like being communicated with.
Blessings,Kat/BardScribe
thank you for this information!
Thanks for the tips, i'll need to review how i am working my hubpages.
Hi Mark. The blend of useful information and a sincere voice in your hub is a real find. I particularly like your mention of avoiding questionable tactics (such as keyword stuffing) and providing useful and original stuff you yourself would like to find when you search for them. The way Google's algorithm works, as you've explained it, seems to reward honest people with something useful to say. I imagine it's a relief for some people to read your article, as they don't have to spend much in promoting their sites/hubs; they only need to sincerely want to provide something useful, and with all that packaged along with some reminders (break your text into sections, so that it's easier to read, and so on) that anyone can follow. Good job.
Long but very informative hub. You inspired me.
Thanks for the information and for not trying to sell something!
Thanks Mark. It looks like I will have to revist my Hub creating practices. Some good well reasoned advice.
Another way to spot a good hub is by the quality of the responses it gets. I guess your hub ticks that box as well!
It looks like a lot of work...
Continuityand good, original content works for me
Some of your advice is a little deceptive. You say that there are 200,000 results but actually if you do an allinanchor search exact targeting your keyword there is only 5 results.
allinanchor: "2008 motorcycle guide"
So that's really your competition. And of those five, 1 is the hub, 1 is a Scribd page of your hub, and another is a blog post you wrote about the hub. So no wonder it ranks, it's a fairly longtail keyword with very little competition. You should also mention that you submitted it to Stumbleupon.
Most of the time if you write a good hub targeting longtail keywords and throw a few links at it, it will rank on the first page.
Still, a great hub.
Nice and informative article. I have recently joined hubpages and am getting impressed with the quality of articles being published here. No wonder your score is 100. After reading this one, I joined your fan club. Hoping to learn as I read on...
- vish.
I am very new to all this, and I haven`t created my first hub yet . But I am so happy that I found this absolutely great instructions. Why not learn from the creme de la creme of the best, if it`s possible ? Thank you so much !
bigcat
you have specified a specific keyword ,
by this ,
if little or no one uses that keyword , will lead you to go on first page ,
you can also check this keyword ,
rrsv shri''s world ,
first result will be my website
I don't think I ever thanked you for this information. I have used this hub as a reference and even have it bookmarked. Thanks :D
Very useful info here. thumbs up from a new fan.
Grace and peace.
I can't express it, things that take years of struggle, a number of learning sessions, ebooks, SEO all have been covered in this little page. Perfect for No.1 position on Google.
NO offence or anything but the keywording 2008 Motorcycle Guide.
Is only searched 260 times a month, on average. And is only 360500 Other results, not being rude just saying, with under 1 million results you dont need to do what you did to get first :D You did an over kill
brilliant article. I would try and follow your advice. I had written an article on 'how to write an article', but your piece is simply standout.
Thank You for your clear information. This help me a lot to understund how is working the internet.
Thank you for such an informative Hub. I am new to Hubpages and am very grateful for your sharing of educted insights. I look forward to reading more of your hubs.

It's nice that people are so willing to help each other out. Thank you for sharing. Thumbs up as always.
Hey dumbass you dont know a damn thing about organic seo..lol I'm laughing at your page and I know why you dont rank on google. You think you need good content to rank...lol i could outrank you with no content, just pics and affiliate links!
Excellent hub! This has really given me something to think about
Good Job.
Thanks a lot! The information is really usefull. Im trying to climb on top of Google, but still not don it yet. Hope your advices will help me!

Thanks Mark - this information is really useful. I'm new to hubpages but will take a lot of your advice and let you know what results I get from it.
Wow Very Impressive. You got a slam dunk on that one. I joned hubs 2 months ago. Thank You for sharing, caring and MOST important your HONESTY.You give back and that is what life is about helping others. We do reap what we sow. There are plenty of sly wolves in cyberspace. Writing on hub pages blesses me with the freedom to do my thing and stay clear of garbage and or the wanna be rich fast and suck your blood networkers.Check out my hub when you get a second. This is very good information. i did not know about flagship hubs or their specifications. I think I need to try my hand at writing one.
Now to look for a topic. :)
Excellent hub....
Great information. Being new to the Hub I will definitely be following some of these tips.
I do not have my own computer, therefore I must reserve a computer at my local library. Unfortunatley the reservation is for only 2 hours per day. Con't get much reserch done in that amount of time. Besides I am a slow leaner and have to compete with the other library patrons talking, babies crying, Yuck! I have written a book on the challanges people have deal with using a sewing machine. I have been a sewing teacher and the book is an extention of my sewing school. I need to sell my book: Sewing doesn't have to be a mystery! Could Hubs and or Blogging be the avenue in which I can do this? My e-mail: heldbyathread2002@yahoo.com Sincerely, Stephnie Clark, first time author.
Thanks Mark. I just published my first hub, and it uses the example of Bing.com to show that search engines are getting better and better at finding the 1% of information that is high quality. If you want a sustainable way to attract visitors then I agree with you that the focus on quality is the way to go.
Been playing with hubpages and Google does seem to like these pages. Good for SERP domination. Just got #1 for 'optimizing backlinks' with my hub - bit of an obscure keyword but #1 non the less!!
Thank you for this excellent article. I found it in the process of researching how to use Hub Pages as a new venue for sharing on my topic of interest, helping baby boomer entrepreneurs get started. You provide both a content of how to use Hub Pages and the context of how to write a helpful training article. Thank you so much.

Awesome hub with great tips. I've just become one of your newest fans - keep up the good work
Tracey
Read a little this comments section Mark :)
10 months later, my hub about SerialExperiments Lain is still nº1 in google when you type Lain Online.
Sucess!!
The more I read this great hubs the more I find out that am empty, will continue reading your articles, they are very great
Thanks for your thought on this. To summarize the whole thing - produce 'informative' information to the readers minus junk totally. I believe that if everybody follows your preaching, the internet will be easier to navigate - no need to go through the wild and stinky stuffs.
Well that's for informational site or website but that's a total different with personal weblog that serves as an online journal.
Again, thanks ya!
My knowledge continues to go from strength to strength thanks to a person like you, who has taken the time and dedication to create such an informative hub. Excellent information, Thankyou.
Very informative. Kudos to your hub!
really awesome!!!!!
Excellent hub - so refreshing to find a hub that is not simply a thinly-disguised (or even blatant) attempt to sell something. The amount of garbage on the internet can be very frustrating.
The problem is that so much of so-called seo best practice just makes the problem worse. Spinning of articles and submitting to 500 article directories. Where is the sense in that? My own gripe is directory submission - I just cannot believe that Google places any weight whatsoever on a directory listing (I had a rant in one of my hubs: http://hubpages.com/hub/Directory-Submission-Softw - note the sneaky title - playing them at their own game!)
What is very interesting is that this article is on the first page of Google for a "first page of Google" query and yet you have hardly keyword stuffed it!
Great work - and many thanks. Have linked to you from my blog.
Thank you Mark. I have just joined HubPages, this one is really cool. I liked what you said, It's my Internet too...and I am going to use it well. Surely I am going to do that. Good content still and will always rule the Web. Thanks again.
I'm so happy to find your excellent advice. I just posted my first Hub and need all the help I can get. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for your interesting post. I'll try the best to do the same.
Cheer,
Mark, I like your no-nonsense approach style of Hubs! New fan. And I agree, there is so much garbage on the web, it ridiculous. Handling emails in like going through and sorting out trash daily any more.
Keep up the good stuff, Mark!
Very well written hub .....
very much informative ......
Thank you very much for your great hub, for good advice, good wishes and support. Thanks for sharing your experience with all of us.
Mark this is the second hub I have come across writtten by you in the last 2 days and I have only been on hubpages for 2 days but I have really enjoyed reading them both. This was packed full of tips that will hopefully help me when writing my first hub, which I am likely to do in the next day or two. Thanks again for the informative reading.
Sigh...seems to me that everyone number 1 through 10 listing on google these days are hidden Paid for Resultsthat *look* like normal results (they are NOT!)
I have stopped using it as an SE all together now - it just simply *stinks*.
Hi Mark,
Some great tips in your last few hubs Ive read. In the rush to get my number of hubs up, I missed a few important bits of info from flagship hubs. Thanks for reminder.
Further I gotto say thanks for sharing your wisdom on seo for hubs.Your bikes hubs just show that its not a magical niche, but just following the rules. In the great words of Kevin Costner - If you build it they will come.
pr of hubpages make a big difference
Thank you for the great info!
I'm going to keep forging ahead. I can see I have some revising to do here. I'm still and newbie, but doing lots of research on what is the best way to do this. The key word thing is down-right confusing to me, is it something that I'm supposed to "activate" through another site, or are my tags the key words...oy, I like the way you said to do it, then I don't have to worry about the key words. Also, that score thing is unnerving...I find myself checking it, but does it mean anything really? How is it determined. Is it strictly based on traffic or on quality of content? Any other advice?
Thank you for the tips. I'm learning the ropes of Hubpages, so I appreciate all the info.
loved this article and now I am going to work on making a flagship hub. Thanks!
Excellent post , just what I was looking for , Thanks for sharing this valuable information
Book marked this page it is fab thankyou.
Thanks for putting ideas in my head for future hubs (new to writing hubs) and for my website! A few months ago, I absolutely stopped really listening to SEO advice, especially advice on keyword research from keyword research tools, for my website. I made some radical changes using my own brain along with a little help from the reverse keyword research tool provided by my website host. My page rank fell from 2 to 1 (probably because I almost started over with my site) but my traffic & sales just about doubled. you're so right about keywords, page rank and Internet garbage!
Thanks for providing such a clear outline...It is good to read a transparent strategy to reach on top.
very informative!!
I had this bookmarked for a while now, but just until now i'm starting to review my own hubs with these rules, i just have a small question, with 1500 words surely hubpages will sugest a lot more then 15 keywords, is there any disadvantage in having a lot more than that or is the more the merrier ?
wow, this is just what i needed. i've just discovered hubpages and have only in the past month or so become interested in web 2.0. I signed up for a few affiliates and felt dizzy with the directions I could take. But I think your paragraph about not adding more BS to the internet is a very agreeable opinion.
Thanks!
This is a very handy tips posting. I couldn't go reading first to last.
As I am still a beginner, I seem to be stumbling around with my hubs. Since i found this hub last night, I've been overhauling all of them. I literally keep your hub open in one window so I can go down that checklist and be sure all of mine fit the minimum requirements. On the ones I've finished, I have improved the hub's score and received more traffic already. It has not even been 12 hours since I started! Thank you so much for this.
This hub is so true. It only makes sense to make your hub the page you would look for when you are attempting to Google something.
Very well presented. Thanks for the tips!
This is amazing information. Straight to the point. Thanks Mark K. I have read other pages from you. You are excellent for passing out this great ideas. I will put this in mind as write my next hub.
WOW...What a lot of awesome tips. I will give it a try and let you all know the results. Thanks Mark.
Hi Mark... Sure do like your Hubs. After I read them, I save them so that I can read them again. I have been here at Hubpages for about a month. Most of the stuff I write here is to help me organize it for use elsewhere, but there is much fun in making new friends here and the like. I also look at Hubpages as a place to experiment. One experiment was to find out if I could quickly get my hubs to place on the first page of Google and other search engines. My keywords were "Dumb Poem" and "Redneck Recipe." The Hubs have typically placed between #3 and #8, and there is plenty of competition for both. I think that Hubpages traffic has a lot to do with it, but it was (and is still) a fun experiment. :-)
Mark, your so professional, after reading several of your Hubs, I see that I started out better than I am becoming, being influenced by Hub ratings higher than my own, but your content is the key to where I want to go with my writing, your content of your Hubs has the components of quality resource material for people on the search, or doing the research...I aspire to reach the goals you have laid out. Thank, this is two months into my efforts, but at least I have finally found you!
SInce I'm new to Hubpages, I appreciate the concrete tips. In other words there's some work involved :)
Good one Mark, every one of us needs help and reminders.
Very insightful. Thank you for sharing your information.
Thanks body. You are indeed an 'hubberlite'. I wish I read the hub guide and your words of inspiration before I started blogging. I am in the process of gathering info on making money online through hubPages and other sites. I am by nature skeptical of all these get rich scams out there. If forex trading is such a good money making, all these phony adverts will not be in public domain. Learning fast.
Mark Knowles,
Your page can be appeared on first page that ready require much efforts by following some strict guidelines. I am new here but learn many things just for your this post alone.
Best wishes and more success to you.
I am learning a lot by writing hubs and reading other hubs such as yours, Mark. Your wealth of information helps me with my hub writing, and I see I can actually make many improvements on my business site as well. Thank you.
Hi Mark,
I do the similar thing and benefited. Most of my hubs are placed in first or second pages of Google for few key words.
Thanks a lot for good tips and advices.
Jyoti Kothari
For someone who is just starting out and trying to wade my way through it - thanks~! Excellent information.
Thank you for some much needed, helpful information, cheers, kimberly
Fantastic information! Well explained. It doesn´t take any fancy stuff get on the first page of Google, all you need to do is write useful and helpful information and use the specs Mark mentioned above. However, it will help if you do some keyword research first to find keywords people actually use.
This hub is useful for all bloggers too. Many bloggers still do not write long blog post, and hardly anyone writes 1,500 words blog posts. That's why many blogs do not have enough traffic from search engines.
That is the guidance that I needed. I must aim higher for more links and longer articles. I was thinking 1000 words was good. Had no idea. Thank you very much!
"On top of that, it’s MY internet too and I want to be able to use it in a way that doesn’t make me want to throw my computer out the window the next time I get a pop up advertisement selling me a penis enlargement cream."
That's hilarious.
When I came across your hub mark, I followed every instruction you mentioned. I am relatively new to hub pages but got 4 out of my 6 hubs on first page of google. Thanks a lot.
Appreciate you not trying to have sign-up for your secret .pdf, newsletter, or mini-course. Loved your opening!
Thanks for your valuable suggestion. Its really going to be a best guide for the new hubbers, as i'm one of them. Will surely start implementing this hereafter.
This is great. Very clear on the rules. Now I will have to try it. Haven't gotten too far yet.
Good Hub here!
Very useful advice and tips!
Can't believe I've only just come across this hub. One of the most comprehensive 'hubs on hubbing' on the whole site (and I've read a LOT) Will bookmark it for future reference for sure!
Awesome Hub. Super thorough and very well written with lots of great advice. I agree completely that content is key -- you have to write meaningful, helpful, well-written content. Great job on this one!
Knowles, thanks for this hub. Really helpful and keeps my eye on the right ball. It's not the money we should be after, but providing good quality content for the largest community on the planet, the internet community. If we see a need (by doing good keyword research) and we fill that need with useful content that benefits people and give people what they are looking for, the money should come as a nice after-thought. There are so many scammers out there and I'm grateful for guys like you online. It's refreshing too because I don't think there's one person who wants to write content for a living that hasn't had the temptation to become a scammer himself. Thanks again!
Nice tips Mark. thanks for these tips :)
Can you guide me by letting me know where to post my kontera and adsense links when it says at the bottom of the page? I am a newby to this site. What will I see once pasted and do I first open a capsule titled "link" before doing this? Please help. Thanks! Tracie's Talking
A sudden spike in google traffic recently led me to investigate and guess what - one of my hubs made the first page too! No keyword stuffing or even particularly targeted SEO writing, but interestingly enough I just checked your advice and my hub fitted with everything you suggested. Must be I'm finally getting the hang of this online writing (about time too)!
Another Great share! will bookmark this for future hubbing reference :)
This is a hub which obviously stands the test of time. At the moment I'm very much a newbie with a lot to learn and this hub gives me an excellent blueprint to aspire to. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
This is a far better one than your hub on blogging. The 2008 Motorcycle hub is also good quality but the blogging one is rated just a point below them.
Putting the same search phrase as the name of your webpage is not a good test. What other search phrases bring your page to the top?
My comment is that the blogging hub didn't have the information that you mentioned in this hub, but received the same marks.
just doing research...
Wow - I just joined your fan club! This is an excellent hub. Thank you for all the tips and techniques for success with our hubs and Adsense revenues. Your writing is high quality and I will definitely be checking out your other articles too.
Also, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Good tips for a top hub. Thank you for sharing and congrats on your success.

Thanks to you,now i managed to place my hubs at first google front page too!
Healing foods from asia
Great one! Love the fact that it's free and genuine and not loaded with links to make you money!
Love it man and keep up the brilliance and cool attitude!
This is a great hub. I wrote a hub about 7 months ago and it has been on page 1 of Google for bout 6 months and often trades 1-3 place with Court from The Keyword Academy. The hub is "Does Making Money Posting Links For Google Really Work" http://hubpages.com/hub/DOES-MAKING-MONEY-POSTING- . When I wrote the hub it was long before I knew anything about SEO or realized tha 75% of my Adsense earnings were coming from this single hub and the content alone got it ranked pretty high. I have only been on Hubpages for 7 months and I have several of my hubs ranking well on Google for content alone. This goes to show that what you are saying is true that content is what gets you to the top better than keyword research and cheap tricks.
hiya, thanks for you hubs, very intersting, keep up the good work, thanks again
Hey this is good for us noobs. Still trying to figure out the whole capsule thing, but this is useful. Now I know what I need for a higher hubscore.
Thank you for writing something well-written and easily readable. I have just today started a HUB page and so want to generate income in addition to having another outlet for my writing and the passing on of the wisdom I've gained and still receive daily. I like that you reminded us that the HUB site directs us as you did.
Great tips Mark.Everybody need this type of tips because we want good traffic and good ranking so your article really very helpful for me.Thanks...................
I bookmarked it. Need to have more time to read. Thanks for sharing the great tips.
Hey, thanks for all the tips. It's clear you put a lot of hard work into your hubs. Good luck to you.
thank you this. Beginning to feel i have a glimmer of understanding
Thank you, thank you, and thank you!!!!
he mark,
this is great content. It´s a pitty that I see this only after my 6th (rather unsuccessfull) hub :) I´ll certainly apply the strategies to improve them.....
Man thanks so much for the info.I use to believe that you need to have your own domain name and web host for first page ranking in Google. But man this is priceless .You don't know what you just did for a fellow marketer like me.Thanks a lot .I mean it from the bottom of my heart.
Common sense is all it takes... Sometimes the answer is so simple you miss it.
Very good info sir!
The value you have added here is so much appreciated, especially when there is such a flood of marketing on SEO techniques and keyword analysis. Thanks!
This is a hub worth bookmarking and returning to for reference. Thank you for sharing such useful information.
For me writing hubs has been a case of the more I find out the 'less I seem to know' in the sense that for everything I learn I soon realise that I need to learn even more to be better at it. However I think that is part of the appeal and why I love finding hubs like this to read.
Great content, it's helpful to be reminded of the basic rules of the game. It seams simple and obvious, but when there's money to be made, it's hard for people not to lose their heads and game the system for all it's worth.
This looks like useful information - thanks. I'll start applying it - there's so much to learn!!!
Btw - I really like your images you used.
If I write every Hub according to the guidelines you mentioned, is it then down to luck getting a page 1 listing on Google or should they all end up there eventually?
I am new here and been clicking around for ideas on the best way to make new Hub Pages. This hub nails it. Very well done. Thanks for the great information.
The guy that refered me to hubpages (writer 83) has a few on page one.
This is absolutely fabulous Mark.
I have implemented some of the strategies, that I think may help me as I just started hubbing. Thank You so much for sharing your insight!
Renee.
I just checked your Forex hub, http://hubpages.com/hub/Forex-Trading-a-guide; none of the keywords are on the first page of Google results. Of course, that may change tomorrow because Google indexing isn't a static process.
I also checked Yahoo: same results.
Neither of those phrases are in your keyword list, so I did not know to look for them.
Why not just create good articles in general? Instead of focusing on ranking it on Google's top page, just make a good, relevant article and it will rank where it needs to, maybe not first page, but it will rank and people will read it.
You have a good point and I will try to use it. Thanks.
Thank you for th info, will try to put it to good use..
I know you wrote this 2 years ago but I just discovered it now and glad I did. Now I have work to do. I can go over a lot of my existing hubs and improve them based on what I learn from you. Thanks.
Excellent tips. I had pretty much discovered all that information for myself but you are confirming what I have found out in theory. Thank you for sharing this know-how!
You know another reason why this man's articles go to the top? Because he gives real information. Not vague fluff. Real, solid info. Thanks for keeping it real, man. I learned a lot from this one. 3 YouTube videos per hub? See, that's what I'm talking about - data!
Great hub!Its great when people actually post something of interest and with quailty information. Ive bookmarked it so youve definitely proven that point in the hub! Thanks :-)
Thanks so much for the tips! Just started writing Hubs and this is exactly what I needed to know. Already have this article bookmarked.
Hey Mark I took your advice and wrote a hub with videos in it and I think it worked!! Thanks. I'll keep your points in mind whenever I write my hubs.. well I'll try to! I am forgetful at times!
Today I found out one of my hubs was nominated for a Hubnugget. This hub here defiantly was a big help for me to learn how to do things the right way 5 weeks ago when I was very new here.
While my hub doesn't 100% follow all of your advice, it was still good enough to get me noticed. Another of my hubs is currently ranking #12 out of 33 million competing on Google! Thanks once again for this useful hub.
Thank you Mark---now when anyone searches for Rapunzel's Gold, Jack's Seeds and The Prince's Flower, it comes up number one on google. =:) Just kidding, who would? I mean thank you for unselfishly telling us what we need to know. I will be a fan soon.
You are the best for some reason :) thumps up from me
Thanks Mark. This is a very valuable info. Will bookmark this as a reminder.
How many click a day from Google do you get from that top placement ?
I wonder how many hubs one needs to make a full living. Is it necessary to have my own website in addition to my hubtivity.
Hi Mark,
This is one of the few articles I’ve seen in a long time that doesn’t sell an ebook and actually tells something useful. Yesterday I published my first hub, following some of your tips, and today I saw it on the first page of Google. It’s at the bottom but hey…, it’s still the first page :)). Thanks!
thanks for the information but still keywords the most essence of on page optimization I really appreciate about this useful information :-)
i got my hubpage to the top 5 searchs on google
Thanks for the very well written and informative hub, Mark! I plan to read a lot more of yours.
Wow you are a real website profesional. I am a new hubber and dont know how to cut and paste htmls into the code for my website. Wher is my website code located? How do I find it? Can you help me with this answer? Thankyou
Nice, thanks for the great article. As always it comes down to content, content, content.
This is like the billionth time I've referred to this hub to make sure I'm doing things right. I don't agree with everything here but I certainly don't disagree. I implement my favorite ideas presented here on my hubs and they all seem to have a positive effect. Thanks for doing this.
Wow. I have a lot to learn. I don't even know how to do the blue links yet. Thank you for your article. It's my homework.
Wow, just when I finally learned about searching for word counts and phrases. It makes sense, though, all that you've said. I'm printing it out. Thanks.
Bookmarking this. Thank you for sharing this information.
As always straight talking and excellent teachung hub.
Will go back and add some more videos and add in the most used incorrect spelling onto my tabs too.

Very well written and informative. Thank You Mark.. I wonder though, how do you set up to make any kind of income from a hub? I tried to set it up and Im still not sure if I even got anything on there right. What is the average income for a fair to midland hub page with varied topics per month. Any ideas or advice? Thank Again..great article
Thanks Mark, I'm new here so this post was really helpful, now I'll know how to do better on my next Hub. I'm a blogger so i think I'll need to expand my thoughts and research somewhat to live up to the standards here.
Thanks again.
Hi. if i make a hub , i can advertise for example for amazon etc, can people find my hub by searching a word in google?for example; sewing machine
I am learning lots here on your hub page.
Shealy Healy

It was a wonderful and well written article. I totally agree that as long as you are providing quality stuff, you need not to worry about other dirty tricks..
Request you to please look into some of my article and guide me to improve quality.
Hi! Awesome! Great to be a part of this discussion! -Thanks
excellent, and well-written. thanks so much for sharing your advice and success!
that's right. The right key word get the right contents.
How would I apply this excellent information to my short-story hubs? I have posted each of my short-stories as a hub. Hard to get people to visit them.
Thank you for the quick reply. I will try that. The video capsules don't have to be your own video uploads?
a post like that sure would have lots of variety. that really helped thanks im going to follow you
I just found you and I'm thrilled! You have a lot of really good, straight-forward information here. Thank you very much!
Great; I'm going to put some of this into action straight away. Firstly, I'll see what sort of difference a 1500 word hub makes to the ranking, as well as outbound links.
Thanks for posting
Wow! Even though this article was posted two years ago, it is still current and crisp! Thanks so much for sharing. As a HubPages newbie - this was an excellent piece.
Tor Constantino
Thanks Mark for the advice and sharing your expertise.
Like everyone else I would like my hubs and webpages to be on Google's first page. For a quality content hub do you think one should strictly follow the Hubpage Flagship content guidelines with only a few text capsules (I think 3 only)? I'm a new hubber and I read other hubs recommending to use several text capsules. These advice seem to differ from the flagship guidelines. What's your opinion Mark?
Thank you for sharing this insightful information. I don't know what a flagship hub is so will have to browse hubpages to find out.
I have hubs that appear on the first page of google and I don't have any youtube videos or link capsules, and some of the other things you mention. I wish I knew what I actually did to make those hubs appear on google's first page so I can use the same method on my other hubs.
But I am also curious to try this flagship hub thing and to see if I can make it work.
Lena
Thanks for the info. I'm currently building backlinks to my hub to help it in SERP.
This is a goldmine of information. I appreciate your time and helpful knowledge. Katie
Hey thanks for this hub this was awesome. I have read a ton of pages about SEO and how to make a quality hub. I am totally new to hubpages and blogging and everything else here. I agree with you on making QUALITY not another piece of trash to throw in the whole.
Could you look at my current 2 hubs and let me know how i am doing. I know they are sub par but i need to know if i am doing anything right lol. thanks for everything I really appreciate your hubs and any advice or critiquing you might give me
Hi Mark
Great Article, i followed your advice and wrote a hub included everything you mentioned. Not yet on first page i don't know what might be wrong.
Could you or anyone please have a look and tell me whether i did things right.Am getting very minimal traffic that what i expected.

Thanks
"99% of the Internet is Garbage"
Sometimes I wish we could go through and delete the crap that's on the internet. Well, or have higher powers do so. Wipe the crap out, so that the quality will remain.
it is amazing how people talk about the weirdest things. Like about the difference between "That and Which"... seriously... someone wrote a huge article on the difference between the 2 words. I am assuming because most people skipped 5th grade English lol
Nice guide, thanks for the explanantion. Nice to see a no nonsense style of writing for once.
This was good information. Thanks for sharing. I just have one question. How does one link to other sources? I mean is there a step by step explanation?
Thank you Mark for this informative hub that is loaded with ideas and sources that truly work>> hence your screen shot of no. 1 page rank. Once again I'm reminded that Content Is King. Thank you also for the format ideas. Seems like a lot of work, but most certainly worth the effort for anybody who wants positive results.
Thanks so much. I used much of your advice for one of my hubs, expanding it to 1500 words, adding news feeds links and videos and now it is on the first page. Well you have to type in something similar to the title. But I have started to get google views instead of just hubpage views so thanks so much!
Hi Mark
I have reviewed this hub so many times and have applied your strategy to my wordpress powered website on twenty of my pages. About every 3 weeks I’ve noticed my pages creeping higher in the google search results. I even have a few on the first page above other sites with over a hundred backlinks. Thank you for all the advise you give it has made a big difference. My next project is to start updating my hubpages.
Yikes! I'm not ready to handle all of this yet!!!!!!!!! But reading your hub gives me some goals when I'm ready and until I get ready. I'm still trying to figure out how to paste the HTML into the code for my website. I see the code, but what is the code for my website and where do I place it. There's some hub info but it's not clear to me. I just need a finger pointing. ha ha Thanks, good writing!! Hey, if you want to point the finger for me, maybe you would e-mail me at Kris-tyms@hotmail.com.
Hi Mark,
I bow down to you! I just did the Google search and you are still in the #1 and # 2 spot on first page out of About 6,130,000 results according to Google.
I was wondering if I wanted to attempt writing a hub this well put together, should I take my small handful of hubs that I have already published and revamp them into a beautiful piece of work, or should I just start making hubs following these guidelines from this day forward?
Thank you for the tips and the demonstration of how powerful hubpages can be.
So much to learn, so little time. I am a sponge and just soaked up every bit of information from this hub that I could possibly absorb. Thanks for putting it out there for everyone. This is great!
I voted it up and I am here as number 22 for my useful vote and I dont know what is my rank here as a commenter, anyway I think it's about a 500 plus comments here!
Hey, Mark knowles, your awesome, keep it up, more powers!
Good stuff! The content is still relevant since you wrote this Hub.
As a newbie, I am so glad to read this hub. I began to worry about why I should write at all if all it's about is keywords and backlinks, driving traffic to your site etc. It sort of takes the joy out of writing. Thank you so much Mark, I had no idea that how long a reader stayed on your page mattered. So, obviously I need to write longer hubs and also try the video capsule link. I had always been afraid of video thinking it would send readers running, but I think I'll give it a try on a few of my hubs.
Have rated up your hub,
Thanks.
Thanks for the valuable informations.
Thanks so much for such a clear and detailed post...but geez, no ebook? No newsletter to clutter my inbox? I'm so disappointed. ;)
Seriously, as a newbie here, I just trying to make sense of the entire system. This at least gives me something to consider and work toward creating.
Your spot on Mark. Not only does it work well for hubpages, but works well for any website or blog. Give the reader what they want. :)
What a great read for a newbie! I've been poking around HubPages, getting acquainted with the site...and learning something new here all the time. Thanks for sharing your helpful tips and advice.
I am glad you wrote this and I definitely bookmarked it. And to think you gave that all away for free! I will be sure try the set up with my next hub. I think changing what I write about will help too. A bigger variety of topics will help balance the fun ones that won't earn me a lot of money.
Thanks!
Thanks man, I am a rookie at this and I need all the help I can get. It true 99% of the internet is garbage lol

You have opened my eyes to see the new roads!! Thanks a lot
The only thing I see that ticks me off with Adsense is that you make pennies compared to making money with affiliate products where you could make 50% or more from that product selling price.
It takes the same effort to market a $29 product as it would to market a $1997 product.
I will see how this adsense money making hubs plan works out for me.
Will you take me "under your wing" and make me rich?? J/k--Not REALLY
1500 words to write?hmm...seems not easy...but i will try for it.nice hub.
Very good hub, I would rank it on the first page too!
Wow, Thanks so much for sharing this! You have helped a lot of us out with this !
I think the secret to make my hubs appear in the 1st page is ... LONG TAIL KEYWORDS.
wow man i salute you ..truly speaking this is the most true and sincere article i ever read and i read it complete word by word:P Thanks for the tips and truth...salute you man :P:D
after reading this i have decided to do what ever you suggested :):P thanks
Thank you for the information I hadn't heard about Flagship hubs before, I will look into this more. BTW you motorcycle hub is nice!
does any one know if promoting your own free download in a hub is considered overly promotional?
The hub obviously would have quality information, but at the end, a short blurb about a free special report.
And when writing a flagship hub, it says it can't be copied from any other source. Must be 100 percent original. What if I copy my flagship hub to my blog. Is that bad?
Mark, you really make sense.
As a newbie, I have been looking for some ways on how to be successful in this online writing but find scam articles, and rubbish information from different sites and blogs. But, your hub really is an extremely honest work. I really can see the passion that you are putting to writing.
I now realize that writing online is not only about making money but it's about doing what you love to do. Your sincerity in your hub makes me realize that.
Thanks for the tips.
I wish I would have came across this hub a long time ago. Thanks for such an informative hub. It takes a lot more effort than one would have assumed to get to page one on google.
Mark, You have received all the compliments from prominent persons. I've nothing to say only I would say It's a nice sharing.
Thank you for caring about quality content and sharing your acquired knowledge with me, the Newbie Hubber. I truly appreciated reading your easy to understand, informative article. The article helps me understand how I will benefit from a goal oriented approach to hub writing.
Great hub! The trouble I find is that sometimes this "ideal format" can get in the way of qualitative content. The other issue I have with search engines is that they focus too much on the actual words instead of how people use words when searching.
luv the in your face approach. that gets my attention immediately. writing takes a something and you certainly have "it".
putting your thoughts, feelings, reactions and information in a context that someone actually gets something from it, is wonderful.thank you for sharing with us. i will certainly heed your advise. i am not certain if i will achieve that first page but i am always shooting for the top spot.
i joined the site over 6 months ago and recently started writing my hubs and hope to achieve your success.
Mark!
You're the man. I followed your advice on this hub and my hub, "how to start an online buiness sellilng used cell phones", is on Google's first page! 3rd down.
I just checked a minute ago. My mouth is still open.
I included a link to this hub on my blog post
http://ricoramiro.blogspot.com/2011/04/internet-ma
In my blog post I talk about how I followed your advice and what happened.
Thanks!
hmm well thanks for the nice information! :)
thanks for the information mark! great hub!!
Hi Mark this was a really great topic. I have a question where do you get those pictures for your hub? I noticed you had some Google pictures so that's why I wanted to know.
Hi Mark I am new to Hubpages and I will certainly try your techiques. Thanks heaps.
Great advice on how to build a better hub page, I believe it can be applied to many type of web pages. Thanks you so much !
Atlast, I had found the best hub on hubpages
so much thanx
GREAT! Thanks!!:)
Thanks for this page. I really liked the part about when marketing to make the goal putting out relevant content and rooting out some of the garbage that is everything these days. I relate to searching for things and not getting anything but marketing crap. When you are a marketer yourself it is sooo glaringly obvious how much crap out there is just poorly done affiliate garbage. I think this is very important and really this is why so many people get mad when Google mixes things up, it is like they don't get that if people would just put out helpful, real information then things would not have to change so much in an effort to get rid of the garbage. So thanks for putting that out there. Good food for thought!
Thanks for this hub.i was searching similar topic from a long time.I will follow you surely.
I had to print this hub out and place it on my writing bulletin board. It's freaking brilliant. I will try this format. I have a topic and I am going to explore your formula here. I'm a writer. I've been writing short blogs because I was told that is the best way to go. I want to create substance because I've always felt that was the way to go and this article just prove it. Thank you. Smile!
very detailed and informative. thanks for the information
Wow, I'm a driving instructor. (I think a good on) I love teaching people to drive.
But Now I need to be an internet expert. Used to just put an add in the paper. (no one does this any more, so no one looks) Maybe a 1 page website.
But now. I'm completing against large companies selling lessons, at an un-sustainable rates. Largely due to the instructor factory's. You know the ones;- earn £30,000 a year.
But no one adds up how hard that is to do. You would need to charge near £30 per hour! It costs around £7 per hour to run a car. + ½ hour between lessons. Sorry I’m ranting a bit here. Thing is, out of every hundred who pay out their £2000-£3000 to train as instructors, only around 20 become fully qualified. They run on trainee licences. Some driving schools use them to do the cheap lessons. Driving down the price people expect to pay.
Out of those 100 who start training, after 3years there is only 3 left!! still working as instructors. 1 or 2 of theses will be training the new driving instructors. Talk about the blind leading the blind. But there were always a new one to replace them when they left.
Now the banks have pulled the plug on some of the instructor factory’s So the number of trainees out there is now much lower. But we are in a recession, and the amount of people taking lessons, has dropped by 30%.
I charge less than I did 6 years ago! I am now starting to teach the children of people I taught over twenty years ago.
I do need to get higher up the page rank. Ill call my current site V1, in a couple of weeks, I will put V2 up. So I will try Mark Knowle ideas

Such a great hub!! Every para was packed in with so much tips. Thanks for the introduction to Wil Reynolds.
I am right now going to all my hubs and try to use all your points suggested "How I got my hub on google’s front page".
Thanks tonnes!!
Wow! This is by far the best article I've read about ranking well in search engines. 1500 words! God, that's a lot of words! I can only chunk 300+ in each hub because I mostly write crochet patterns. But I will bookmark this hub because I really want to be the best in my niche. Thanks so much!
This is awesome! I am going to go work up a plan for a few topics that I can write at length about and post some flagships!
Since there are approximately 200 comments on here, I am simply going to state...Thank you! Oh and by the way, your "2008 Motorcycle Guide" results now take up the top 4 spots I believe. Congratulations!
I have to bookmark this. Maybe take one of my hubs and revamp it according to your ideas. Only problem is that I do not do you tube videos, and have no idea to decide which ones are copyrighted or not.
Awesome job! Great advice and inspiration. I just started my very own hub and was completely lost until I saw this!
This is an outstanding hub! Lots of great advice. I think some people might be turned off by a hub that this is so long, but given enough quality content, I am sure it can be quite useful. I was wondering if my hubs were too long, but now I see that they are not long enough!
Woah a long list of comments! You're one of the greatest comment collector due to your great hub. Keep it up
The best quality, most relevant, best written, most well-informed, information packed, good looking web page on that subject.
The Words "Hammer" & "Head" come to mind and I am not talking sharks.
Well put Mark
Wikipedia is the King of SEO IMHO
And I do SEO LOL
SEO in it's truest form is as you say and is purely about helping the search engines to provide the most relevant search results
The better quality results they are able to provide the more people will like them so it is not rocket science to see how to do this and why the likes of Wikipedia are winning the SEO game hands down and probably laughing at all the people out there doing SEO trying to get page 1 for "SEO" by using that first paragraph on the Wikipedia SEO page to do so.
I find it funny as a SEO so others are sure to have noticed and found it funny to see all the SEO providers sites quoting that Wiki page.
Checked out Google. Two of your hubpages are sitting on #1 and #2.
Agreed with Keith above.
And how much time you needed to get on the throne????
Looking forward to your future post on the same topics.
cheers,
Bhaesh
I am just starting and your hub is very informative, thank you. I hope I get the hubbing right!

Hello
You are addressing exactly what my problem is. Traffic to my website (www.edwins-guitarlearning-tips.com). What specific suggestions do you have for a person who want to increase traffic to his website. Right now mine have almost zero traffic. I have learned a lot from your post. Have to actually go over it a few times in order to be able to apply it myself. Promise to work hard on it
Hey this is really helpful!
Thanks!
Wow, this is really helpful. I will try this method with my hub.
Very nice and useful hub. Voted up!
I see this hub has stood the test of time. Good info for new and experienced hubbers. When I began last month I did a lot of reading before beginning any hubs. Then started writing and trying to incorporate as much as my new knowledge as possible. Now I'm in a position to go back and revise to maximize efficiency of those hubs, which are already doing pretty well. I'm hopeful and eager to incorporate these ideas. Thanks - voted up and shared!
Thanks for the information. It is a struggle to get your hub 'up front'. Great tips. Socially shared and voted up and useful.
Thank you for the advise and guidance! It was much needed and I will attempt to better form my own hubs. Thank you again!
Mark - This is quite a lengthy hub and I breathed in every word of it in an effort to learn how to succeed from you. I was guided to your profile by another Hubber who advised to pay attention to what you had to say. Thank you for sharing these tips about what a good hub needs to contain. This is very helpful and much appreciated.

Thank you Mark. I mean it, a no-nonsense, here-ye-are approach, which makes perfect sense to me.
One question though, why on earth are 3 relevant youtube (or video) links important? (maybe I missed it)
Thanks again!
Thoog.
