I will share with you the secret of losing weight. No selling, no scams, nothing for sale. My secret comes from long years of arduous research and is the conclusive finding of hundreds and thousands of medical professionals the World over.

Guaranteed weight loss without the need for any pills, potions, drugs or silly fad diets. No unrealistic exersise programs, no eating specaily prepared meals shipped to your door. The secret will be yours in just a few short sentences time.

This secret has been passed down through the ages. The Tibetan masters and Yogis knew this secret from ages back and taught it to a select few disciples. Slowly the word has spread and even now western medicine and science agrees with this simple yet effective program. And the best thing of all? – It is free. It may even save you money. Perhaps even thousands of dollars.

Weight loss programs

There are many people telling you they have the secret to losing weight, but none of them have the true answer to losing weight – the key to unlocking the mystery that plagues the western world – how to lose weight. Here are a few typical weight loss programs that cannot work in a million years.

Losing weight by Drinking Tea

This one is billed as “A Safe Weight-Loss Method That Works.” And to quote from their advertisement - Documented research reveals what Asian cultures have known for centuries: Green Tea, rich in antioxidants, increases metabolism and helps burn fat. Lose Weight With Green Tea provides all the information you need to incorporate Green Tea safely and sensibly into a successful weight control program.

You would think from this that all you have to do is drink this tea and you will lose weight – Guess what? Nope, not going to work. To be fair, they do have some genuine insights as to how to lose weight, but drinking tea is not the only part of the solution. Keep reading for the “secret,” to guaranteed weight loss.

Foods That Cause You to Lose Weight

This is perhaps the biggest load of rubbish I have read. Mostly because it sounds so plausible – here is a list of foods that you can eat that will cause you to lose weight by speeding up your metabolism.

Sounds good. I guess coffee could fall into that category – it is a diuretic and a stimulant. But really, the only food I am aware of that fits this is celery – it actually tales more energy to chew and digest celery than it provides. Sound like a good diet idea to you? The Celery Diet – Guaranteed to lose weight if you eat nothing but celery. I am in no way suggesting you live on celery, but I guess it would work.

Please do not go out and live on celery for a month. I suspect you will lose weight - but not in a good way.

The South Beach Diet

Now, this one may work, but really, the information in this book is freely available and there is no need to buy special food to follow this sort of diet.

Unless – you are lazy. In which case, this diet is not going to work for you in a million years. They do make some sensible suggestions, but their ultimate goal is to sell you a book and sign you up to have meals delivered or bought through a retailer of some kind. Definitely NOT recommended.

Wu-Yi Tea

This one is most amusing. Another hubber, Maddie Rudd, has already extolled the benefits of this particular tea, so I won’t go on at great lengths. Suffice to say – you cannot lose weight drinking tea. Yes, it’s a great tea. Yes, it has antioxidant properties, but so does any other tea.

It is depressing how many companies are selling this as some sort of magical weight loss supplement, but really, do you think it is that easy?

The so-called “studies,” are nothing less than a clever marketing ploy. Avoid this as a weight loss solution. Buy it as a great tea, but that’s it.

The 14th Dalai Lama

The Secret to Losing Weight

Finally, what you have read this far to discover. The secret handed down in secret through generations of Yogis, Martial Arts experts, Tibetan masters, Scientific geniuses, Doctors and some of the great thinkers of our time. Finally, the secret to losing weight will be revealed…..

The Ancient Secret to Losing Weight

Western Science and Eastern Mysticism have finally joined in agreement. The secret to losing weight is…

To consume less calories than you expend

Simple. Experts and Gurus around the world agree that if you ingest less calories than you burn, you will lose weight. Here is a simple example:

If you eat and drink 2,000 calories and you burn 2,500 calories, you will lose weight – Guaranteed.

If you are overweight, you are not “ill,” you do not have a “disease,” or a “condition,” or a “syndrome.”

You have merely ingested more calories than you have spent – not rocket science. Nothing can change this. It is a physical impossibility to create something from nothing.

Now, eating less than you spend requires some control over what you choose to put in your mouth and some of us (me included) have difficulty with this. But the simple fact remains – the one and only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you eat and drink.

For me, the problem is alcohol - I like wine and beer and I love to find new foods that go well with particular wines.

You do not need to pay a fortune for special diets, or pills or specially prepared food to be delivered to your home. All of that stuff is a big con. You know the high calorie stuff you eat or drink. You know if your body is working hard or you are sitting down all day.

Here are a few tips for achieving this:

  • When eating at a restaurant, only eat half the amount of food put in front of you. Princess Anne said this was how she lost weight. She was eating at official functions so often, she was getting fat, so she decided to only eat half what was on her plate – it worked.
  • Drink a large glass of water with your meals. This will help you to feel fuller and stop eating when you feel full.
  • Eat more fiber. Fiber is indigestible, so it passes straight through your system. It also helps your digestive system to function correctly.
  • Cut out large portions of soft drinks like Coca-Cola – A 32 oz Big Gulp of Coca Cola contains 400 calories and it takes around an hour of strenuous Aerobics to burn this many calories. Replace them with water – the diet junk is at least as bad for you – Nothing but chemical crap. Except Bud Light, which is mostly water ☺ And yes, I consider Bud Light a soft drink.
  • Increase your exercise level. Take the stairs instead of an elevator or escalator. Walk the dog a mile further than usual.

You can change the ratio of calorie intake to expenditure in only two ways. Increase your exercise level or decrease the amount of calories you ingest - or both. The only diet pill that works is amphetamines and that is now illegal. Why do you think Kate Moss is so thin? Yes – Cocaine.

There is no other way to lose weight – This is the one and only way. Many of the diet books, plans, clubs, whatever will only help you lose weight if you cut down the amount of calories you eat or increase the amount of activity you do. It is a good idea to have some sense of the calorific values of particular foods, but you already know the higher ones – They are the ones you like the most ☺.

The great thing about doing it this way, is it will not cost you a penny. Nothing. Free – It might even save you some money. The only thing I would suggest is the F Plan Recipe Book because it is full of good high fiber recipes, but much of this information is available for free online and you can just as easily print them out. I’m old fashioned and I like it on a piece of paper.

This also means that you don’t have to kill yourself by cutting out completely all the foods you like. If you can’t live without a McDonalds burger, by all means have it – Just eat one instead of three, or eat it once a week instead of every other day.

Good Luck

Mark I totally agree with you.

Ten years ago I lost 40 pounds, just eating half of my food and no sweets.

I have support from a friend, we used to go for ice cream every time I lost 6 pounds, just to celebrate, walking, swimming and cycling also helped to stay in shape.

It is as simple as this, eat well, exercise, and burn more calories than you intake.

Other Diets do work, such as the Weight Watchers and The South Beach Diet, I did it, bought the book and NO I am not lazy. These are just simple plans to help those that need a bit of guidance or encouragement.

It is just a matter of common sense, there is no magic book, pill, tea or potion.

Mark Knowles profile image

Exactly - If you have the discipline to follow a diet, they will work. But they are unnecessary - It's all available for free. Quite right, common sense will do it every time.

Thanks for the comment.

My partner and I lost about 10kg each over about 8 months last year - we were camping with a 4WD so limited firdge stacking available! The excercise wasn't excessive but we were certainly do more than sitting on our arses in front of the PC for 8+ huors / day. Big benefit - we didn't have to give up booze!

Good info here, Mark. That green tea diet sure has been gaining a lot of popularity lately. I wrote a hub a while back debunking the foods that supposedly burn calories (so-called negative calorie foods). I successfully lost weight by restricting my calories to 1250-1500 calories a day and exercise. I've kept it off by eating a well-balanced diet and exercise.

MrMarmalade profile image

MrMarmalade 4 years ago

Stacie and Mark,

Many many years ago I went on 1,200 calorie diet and shed the weight .

Self imposed, because I overheard some one say that little fat man and they were not looking at you Mark.

I could eat anything I liked. No restrictions accept 1,200 Cals per day.

i achieved my new mental weight and then had a peanut butter sandwich. The glorious gain became the total loss. Found it was easier to gain rather than lose. Stopped eating peanut butter Sandwhiches. I use to like them too.

Thanks a good hub.

I eat peanut butter all the time - on sandwiches, in smoothies, with chocolate. Still not gaining. All about moderation.

Hey that was a real cool article, especially for me considering lately I haven't been stepping out much since I started doing my own thing from home, except for the 1-1.5 hour a day walk, and Im not overweight or underweight either for that matter. Hate to admit it but I'm more of a Math, Physics and Chemistry guy with the life sciences not making much sense to me other than good food, my walks/jogs and the occasional workout at the bars (the steel ones ;).

Just want to ask you, does your secret also work for cholesterol or is that (high cholesterol) also an urban myth? I'm just under 31 and my HDL was 6.5 which didnt look very pretty to my doc and she said it ain't bad, just marginally high, but you need to bring it down if you wanna stay healthy at 45 and plus. Cheers.

BTW, I'm Taj, a new Hubber, hopefully will be more interactive in the future.

Mark Knowles profile image

Mark Knowles Hub Author 4 years ago

LOL. The short answer is I am not sure. My gut reaction is that the cholesterol thing is overhyped also, but I will look into it.

narbundi 4 years ago

Another little secret is simply not to let yourself get over-weight in the first place. Just be a little bit more aware of your body and when you feel those few extra pounds just cut down and exercise a bit till your back to your normal weight. Keeping it off is a lot easier than getting rid of it once it's there. And nobody goes to sleep a size 10 and wakes up a size 18!

Mark

observer 4 years ago

Yea, eat less than you expend, such a winning formula that it only works for a tiny percentage of people. Have we all suddenly gotten lazy in the last 30 years? Dream on! There is far more at work here, much more than you blithely prescribe. OBESITY IS A METABOLIC DISORDER. Eat less than you burn, and YOU WILL BURN LESS. You will continue to burn less and less until you achieve metabolic equilibrium. It doesn't fit into our craving for a simple equation but that equation does not work. These things are not static.

I'm sorry but know-it-all prescriptions based on "common sense" that somehow fails 90%+ of people the world over may make you appear clever but you're doing absolutely nothing about weight loss.

But yea, wu-yi tea and those other regimes are just as stupid.

Mark Knowles profile image

Mark Knowles Hub Author 4 years ago

LOL That is the biggest load of crap I have ever heard. The only reason it doesn't work is because people DO NOT do it. If you eat less calories than you expend it is simple - You will lose weight.

Metabolic disorder - Metabolic crap. Either you are selling a weight loss drug, or you are ignorant enough to actually believe this rubbish. There is only ONE way to lose weight. Less colories in, more calories out = weight loss. 99% of the diet plans use this to help peple lose weight.

Admittedly, some people have a harder time doing it than others. But it is simple physics. You cannot create something out of nothing. You cannot make it possible to do things that use less energy. If you lift a weight, it takes the same amount of energy to lift that weight regardless. You cannot change that. It is a fixed amount.

And I am not trying to appear clever. This simple rule is something I was taught in school. Physics.

observer 4 years ago

i cant help but notice you either dont mind being more than a bit plump yourself or you're unable to take your own advice mark.

"some have a harder time than others"? MOST people mark. did you notice that in every country obesity is RISING not falling.

sure, if you eat less than you expend you will lose weight. but what happens if what you expend is trending downward? what if your adipose tissues absorb fat to the detriment of the energy needs of your body?

it is a complex hormonal equilibrium. if it were a matter of education and "negative encouragement' (the ridiculing of the overweight), then people would be getting THINNER not FATTER.

i am not selling anything at all. i am suggesting the conventional wisdom seems to be failing more and more people all over the world. if you want to choose a few select examples and ignore the mounting evidence that obesity is growing despite all the "advice" that people are inundated with, well, then you can keep your head deep within the safe confines of your arse. you certainly wouldnt be alone.

Mark Knowles profile image

Mark Knowles Hub Author 4 years ago

I am sorry - conventional wisdom as you call it is not failing. What you seem to be forgetting is that people are NOT eating less. The diets are not failing because they don't work. The diets are failing because people do not stick to them. Big difference.

I am not ridiculing anyone. I admit, I have problems staying thin. I like my beer too much. But that doesn't alter the fact that consuming less calories and increasing your physical activity to the point where you are burning more than you consume will cause you to lose weight.

Deciding to do it and keeping to the regimen is a completely different issue.

Now, it may be that some of these weight loss programs such as weight watchers will help motivate you to stick to the diet, but the fact remains - The only way to lose weight is to do this. There is no other way.

Obesity is growing because people are consuming more and more calories and reducing their physical activity. Not because they have a metabolic disorder.

Lissie profile image

Lissie Level 1 Commenter 4 years ago

It's sad the way the whole weight loss industry has taken over sensible eating. The statistics are b..sh..t - X% of people obese - I guess from your photo you would be called obese, so would most rugb plaers and myself - but I'm the same dress size as Marilyn Monroe - was she obese - by the BMI today probably! So a whole of people who aren't at risk are trying to loose weight by going on a stravation diets, they then do slow their metabolism - which is why most diets "fail" The far better way to do is just concentrate on the exercise, if you are really obese and can' exercise then you really have a problem - go on the measurements not the scales - after all getting fit will make you put on weight- the inches come off but muscle weighs more than fat!

Mark Knowles profile image

Mark Knowles Hub Author 4 years ago

Yup Rugby player. Well...not for a while, but yes, I am still built like a rugby player after all this time. Quite right, a combination of exercise and reduction in calorific intake will do it every time. I don't care how many doctors and drug companies tell me it's a disease curable with a drug. They are lying through their back teeth.

Obesity is more than just about eating less and burning more...... it is an epidemic, especially with our young people. If we are going to start anywhere, we need to begin with education in our schools about moderation and portion control, about why people overeat in the first place. What did we not get as a child that we are trying to comfort by stuffing our face now! It is a complex issue that goes beyond eating right and exercising, although that is exactly what needs to occur in order to lose the weight. But we need to look beyond that if we are going to make a dent in solving the issue. Have you seen the portion sizes in restaurants these days....Society in a sense, promotes that which keeps us FAT.....Can you imagine if people stopped eating junk food.....our economy would be worse off than it is now, I would imagine....anyways, I could go on and on and probably not make any sense at all....Obesity starts with education at the elementary level and that is the point I am trying to make, in order to make a change....

Mark Knowles profile image

Mark Knowles Hub Author 4 years ago

I agree. Education is important. We need to teach people that the only way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more. But this information is freely available - and taught in school - alongside a McDonald's advertisement and a coca cola vending machine in the school yard.

But, the simple fact remains - there is only one way to lose weight and that is to ingest less calories than you burn. And that's what this hub is about - trying to educate people to that simple fact.

How come mostly people who live in North America seem to have this "Metabolic disorder"? Where was this "Metabolic disorder" 100 years ago? Sorry, the Metabolic disorder argument always frustrates me.

Excellent article Mark. You're speaking the truth. Part of me thinks that we don't hear much of this reasoning and logic for two reasons:

1. It's something everybody already sort of knows, so it never seems like a revolutionary new "silver bullet". It doesn't have that new sexy luster, because its an old idea.

2. It's hard to make money off of a book when the title is "Eat Less, Exercise More".

I agree, so many ppl are turning to "fat surgery" because they can not control their eating. They butcher their bodies, and for what? So they can eat less, and exercise more. If they just followed the advice of the weight loss surgeon (who wants your insurance money) you wouldn't even need the surgery!

As for the eating half a meal, I always aske for a box as soon as my entree is served. Out of sight, out of mind!

Mark Knowles profile image

Mark Knowles Hub Author 4 years ago

That's a great idea. I found that even though I am fairly well built, get a lot of exercise and like to eat, when I lived in the US, I was often given more food that I wanted in restaurants. Another thing I did, was to split an entree with someone.

caspar profile image

Great hub, Mark. Eating just half of what's put on your plate in a restaurant is an excellent idea. Restaurant portions are HUGE, especially in the US. When I was on holiday there I simply couldn't eat a whole plateful, no matter how tasty the food. If I was faced with those portions at every meal, I'd be twice the size I am now (and I'm not exactly Twiggy anyway).

Good Hub, Mark.  The comments about metabolism slowing when you diet are true - but only if you take it to extremes and starve yourself.

Most people don't realise the truth of another comment - that it's much, much harder to lose the weight than not gain in the first place - until it's too late.  It's not that difficult to retrain yourself to eat a normal amount of food each day, but it's hard work to deny yourself enough to lose pounds.  People start looking for reasons why it's so hard when it's quite simple - if you eat less than your brain thinks you need, you're going to feel hungry.

I notice you advise people to cut back on soft drinks but not on wine... My problem (and my husband's) is that it's very hard not to finish a nice bottle of Hunter Shiraz once you've opened it.

Here is a comment form someone who lost 75 lbs in a 9 month period, gained it back over the last 10 years, and have vowed to lose 100 pounds this year. So far I have lost 35 lbs as of yesterday.

Mark's common sense approach is absolutely true. Too many people are looking for an easy way out. It is fairly easy to keep the weight off but very hard to lose it. The key is to make small life style changes in your eating habits and exercise routine.

Slow but sure wins the race. People want fast results which cause them to take drastic measures. When you begin a program that varies too much from your normal routine, it is doomed to fail. You will never stick to the program.

There is a little more to it than the brutally obvious "burn more than you consume". There is a tremendous psychological factor involved and there are things you can do that will help your metabolism burn calories more efficiently.

Making small changes in your life like drinking nothing but water can make a huge impact. Understanding how your digestive system works and which combinations of foods you should eat can also aide your weight loss dramatically.

Granted, you can lose weight with the absolute, basic, common sense, approach, but I prefer the educated, efficient, common sense approach. I agree wholeheartedly that the weight loss industry is a joke and the FDA should be strung up by the short hairs for allowing them to get away with some of the things that they do.

What I do is to do 15-20 minutes workout in the morning and before lunch. Go on a fruit diet, and walk (around 10-20 minutes walk) to the office every day. On Sundays, I go practice martial arts with my buddies. I could lose as much as 20 pounds this way. I also drink green tea with my meals.

I do these types of exercises since I am a very busy office worker and can't afford to go to the gym on weekdays : http://www.pichi-pichi.org/health/a-workout-in-jus (Credit is deserved for the blog poster :D )

Although - if you are genuinely only ingesting 1200-1300 calories a day, that should be enough in and of itself.
