Buy Cheap Castle Properties For Sale In England

By Mark Knowles

There are a surprising amount of castles for sale around the world, and the variety amongst them is amazing. You can even – if you should so desire – have a new castle built for you. I was a bit shocked at that but it is true and there are several companies around that build new castles to order. American companies – of course - and building from concrete, but I suspect they would be warmer and less expensive to heat than your typical medieval castle.

Once I started looking into the varieties of castles for sale, I became pretty enchanted with some of the designs. There is a pretty big difference between a Japanese castle and an English or European one. Some of the designs are superb, and I have added a variety in the slideshow here on the right. These are all actually for sale or rent at the moment.

Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany

Many of the European and English castles come with a title, so if you fancy becoming a Scottish Laird, or an Italian Count, all you need to do is pony up the money for the right castle. Be sure you know the rights and responsibilities that come with the title though – some of those rules were written a long time ago and tend to include things like “the right to de-flower any virgin within 5,000 feet of the main turret,” and these sort of things don’t go down too well with the locals nowadays.

The main issue with buying a castle is – the running costs. A lot of the castles for sale are only up for sale because the owner is unable to pay the maintenance costs. In the UK, a lot of these types of castle properties end up being given over to the National Trust and the owner being allowed to use a small portion to live in without the burden of maintaining them. The same thing happens in Japan because the running costs are so high. Gone are the days when the local Laird/Daimyo/Count could simply raise taxes – now you have to either own an oil company or make the castle pay it’s own pay – usually as a tourist attraction.

I cannot imagine how much it would cost to heat a castle like the Scottish one in the slideshow – pretty horrendous though. That one is actually popular as a film set and was the castle used in the movie “Highlander.” Some of the Japanese castles are incredibly cheap – and when I say cheap, I mean a couple of million dollars. But when you consider a loft apartment in Manhattan could cost more than that – the word is “cheap.”

There are actually quite a lot of castles for sale in England, and there are literally dozens of Chateaus, mock castles and goodness’ knows what else lying around the European country side – from Romania to Spain and all points in between. Sometime ago I wrote a comprehensive guide to castles for sale, with dozens of high quality photos.

I think that with any one of these castles, Mark, if you have to ask how much they cost, you probably can't afford it :D

I have a friend who for a period of time was living in a mock castle built by a rich Victorian. Was rather impressive, but they gave it up because of the running costs. Apparently despite being renovated it was still costing more to heat and light for one week in the winter than an average UK household would spend on such bills in a year!

They cost a fortune to run - that is why they are "relatively" cheap to buy.

I'm waiting for a solar castle with a soccer field. Not in the market yet. Please let me know as soon as you find one!

I couldn't read the caption below the castle after Neuschwanstein (obscured by the picture). What/where is it?

Love Neuschwanstein. Wonder how much just to rent the music room? I'd lay on the floor and look at the ceiling. It's my favorite room.

I'll definitely check out the other castle hubs. Anything on "fixer upper" castles? J/K

Dracula's castle, I like it! Sounds sooo much more exciting than "the Disney castle" (but I still love that music room ceiling).

This was definitely an enjoyable read and one that certainly encourages dreams. Oh, to win that one big lottery, I might just be able to afford to visit them...'cause even with a huge win, I still don't think I could afford the upkeep on one. We can all dream though

I promised my friend a few years back that I would buy them a castle when I was a millionaire... I was counting on one not being for sale, but now I'm screwed... (not that I am a millionaire yet)

You appear to be using "England" to mean The United Kingdom".

Scotland is not part of England, but it is part of The United Kingdom.
